Re: All opinions welcomed

I would find a Super Combat and build it. The main purpose of a Close Ratio Trans is to keep the engine revving with minimum RPM drop while shifting through the gears. The bigger the Engine, the less of a need for a Close Ratio Trans. Watch NHRA Pro Stock Cars run. They have Close Ratio Transmission...

I had the same problem on my 73 Dirt Squirt. The Shifter Guide arm had extra shims added causing it to be way too tight. I removed one shim and it works Great!!! Joe.

Re: New Member - 1974 Super Rat (98) Ran for 30 min and then NO SPARK . . .

It may not be your problem BUT check the crank key for the Rotor. I had that problem on my CR500 when the key sheared. It sure is nice when you have spare parts. The main problem we had back in the day was the Spark Plug cap. It had a aluminum pointed screw that would burn up. Your cap should be a b...

Just go to the Website Owned by Terry Larson (HPI). Go to the Schematics for the Model 96. 100% correct. I have a 1973 Dirt Squirt . Simple simple simple to figure out. Joe

Re: Why is it…..

The first thing to do is make sure your Compression Tester is reading correctly. Check the Ring or Rings in the Cylinder by holding the Cylinder up to a light . If you see any light in between the ring and Cylinder either the cylinder is out of round or the Ring is defective. I recently had this pro...

Hodaka Piston Pin

I finished a 1971 Super Rat Engine with a 52mm Webco Piston. No problem. BUT the Piston Pin was WAY too long. The 52mm Piston uses the standard 42mm Pin but the one in the Box is 45.75mm long. Is this Pin for the 125 Kit that Webco sold? I know that the 125 Webco Kit for the 93 Super Rat took a 12mm...

I had the same problem in the past. I had the Clutch Pinion Bushing weld itself to the Pinion Gear. Your Bike has a Needle Bearing. Much better. Check the needle bearing. It may be shot. Joe

Re: Help to ID a Bike Model

It sure is nice when the Frame has the Tag on it. My Super Rat was Manufactured September 1971. The Information is really good for that year. It looks like the 1969 1970 Super Rats are a little harder to figure out because the information for the 1970 Engine Start Number is unknown. Paul Stannard sa...

Re: Drive flange differences

I think that the spacer and offset sprocket used on the 93A and 93B was because of the Chain Guard. It has more clearance for the larger 3.25x18 tire so the spacer and offset sprocket were used to keep the chain from digging into the Chain Guard. Terry sells the Drive Flange #929285 for $14.95. It c...

Re: picking

It pays to check out old Japanese bikes just for the correct Takasago Rims. Yamaha AT1 And CT1 used the same rims that Hodaka did. The 1.85-18 rim is common on the CT1 Yamaha in 1971 and 1972 so you 93 Super Rat fans may get lucky. The date codes are kinda important to me and the older AT1 had 1.60-...

That`s how I would have bolted the head on. The air gets pulled in and would get blown right out the back. It may be installed backwards from what Webco intended but I can bet the engine will run cooler the way Max installed it. I don`t want to piss anyone off BUT Webco Designed that head wrong and ...

Re: Super Rat fork tubes

The Super Rat Forks in 1969 1970 and the first 300 1971 Super rat forks were the same. They had the damper rods welded to the Outer Tubes . Bad forks. Beginning Frame #B53413 came with far better forks. They were used on the 93A 93B 94 94A 95 and Model 96 Dirt Squirts. Look for 1969 1970 Yamaha AT1 ...

Re: Where to start

Painting can be tricky. I`m going to the Automotive Paint supply and get paint mixed for the 3 Super Rats i`m putting together. The closest Paint for the Model 93s that I found is VHT SP119. Chevy Red Orange. The Air Cleaner is RED. Way darker than the Frame. Terry at HPI has a bunch of Air Cleaner ...

Same here! A local Motorcycle Shop sold me all the Hodaka parts they had. There were 7 Kick Roller Retainers Part #904714. I looked them over and of the 7, 3 had tiny itsy bitsy cracks on the corners of the 5 cutouts. New old stock parts. I only use the Heavy Duty ones from Terry Larsen. When you ca...

Re: Why oh why...

The bluish coloring looks like it may have been Induction Hardened. I do however believe that a 250 Counter Shaft can be found that wont wear out. Good point Clarence. The earlier Hodaka Counter Shafts were basically made from premium Tool Steel : Hard enough to not wear out BUT not so hard that it ...

If you think about how clutches would basically explode in some super high horsepower cars BUT the Input Splines on the Transmission were just fine, what does that tell you? I have however seen them twist but never wear out. The 250 Hodaka Counter Shaft may be surfaced hardened but past that point i...

Re: Why oh why...

What I would do at this point is to find a used shaft that shows no signs of wear. I had this happen back in the day to my Super Rat clutch BUT the Crank shaft splines were Perfect. Sometimes a used part that has proven to be trouble free is the best option. Just my opinion. Joe.

Re: Why oh why...

Incredible !!! What is happening here is a hardness problem. Can you get a new counter shaft and get it hardened so this wont happen? That depends on the metal it`s made of. This may be a problem that just can`t be fixed. Joe
