The 175SL uses the same drive flange as the Road Toad and the 03 Wombat.
So, I would say you are going to have to use the same tires you would use on those models, or the chain will interfere.

Re: Looking for a new rear tire
Check out the Duro HF335 4.10x18 which is about the same width as a 3.50 cheng shin. I measured the Duro with a set of calipers. I came up with 3.940" on the widest part. I use it on my 98 and 99 framed bikes. I got the advice from a Penton owner who uses it on his Berkshire. Mark in Illinois #...

Re: HT3 Pipe Question
This is the one I did on my 97. This is a HT1 pipe. I didn't seal this one, the bike is very rich, so you can see some drool. :D Any HT RTV sealant like Charlie mentioned would be good. I can't find mine but it's whatever I had laying around. Should be red for the coolness factor. 8-) Planning on Je...

Re: HT3 Pipe Question
I think that is how the 03 gasket comes. There is a stop on the 03 pipe to hold the gasket. That being said, I use the 03 exhaust flange without the gasket on my 98, with my HT2 pipe. Never had a problem. Instead of the gasket, I fill the void with hi temp silicone. I have also cut down the gasket a...

Re: Kick Start Lever or Coupler Needed!
If I remember correctly, this is an 03 frame with a non injected (94/95/97) 125 motor. If so, that is why the 03 kicker on the left won't work. The 03 motors are wider, so the knuckle on the bottom of the kicker is shorter. That is why you are not clearing the frame. The kicker on the right looks li...

Re: Diamond Dons Vintage MX
The track is very vintage friendly. Last year we had about 20 Hodakas show up. They usually get close to 300 vintage bikes entered for VMX. I'll be building and installing a clutch in an ACE 90 on Friday if anyone is interested in such things. :) I'm planning on riding the cross country and 100cc VM...

Re: shifter cover compatibility
While the oil injected cover is different, a 94 (Hodaka) shift cover will bolt onto a 99/01/02/03 motor. My 03 Cross Country motor has the rear mounting lug behind the C/S sprocket broken off. I use a 94 cover on it. Works well and confuses people at the same time. :o  8-) Mark in Illinois AH...

Re: model 61 seat
Like Rich said, you just have to remove the weld nuts from the mounting bracket for the spring pins to work. Or maybe just drill them out. However, you want to use a 97,98,99,01,02,03 seat for a match to the 61. The 94,95,96 seat pans have shorter rear brackets, and the pan itself has less overhang ...

Re: Road Toad third gear failure
Never had the shoes grow that much to cause dragging. I have had vintage pads separate from vintage shoes. :o I measured the Duro with a set of calipers. I came up with 3.940" on the widest part. You do have some extra chain room using the primary kick/injected motor. And of course, different b...

Re: Control Rod not moving
Frankenbikes, or as I call them, "bitsa bikes", are some of my favorites. :) I have a couple of them myself. Yes, for the 94 transmission, all shoulders to the left. I assume this transmission was assembled when you got it. Another thing to look out for is using the proper gears/kick start...

I'm using an 02 tank on mine. The original tank was rusted thru. Had a lot of the parts replated recently. Hope to get to the motor this spring. Were the clutch cover, ignition cover, and shift cover painted on the 175 like the 100/125 or not? http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp56/NBR-Prof-Nut/hod...

Another item to check is to make sure the counter shaft bearing in the left case half is fully seated.
If it's not, it could bind up the gear stack. Been there, done that.

Re: Road Toad third gear failure
I have broken 3 sets of 3rd gear on 97/98 models. I think mine were mainly caused by the rear brake like Paul mentioned. I didn't keep much free play in my brake pedal. I now have a lot of free play, and use the hardened gear sets, so I don't know which made the difference. I would definitely go wit...

Which model Hodaka are you working on?
The shop manual gear stack doesn't apply to the 03 Wombat, or the Dirt Squirt 80.

Re: Ace 100 Transmission in a Combat Wombat--Huh?
Hodaka gears have been known to grenade on occasion. :o  :( I picked up a 98 bottom end once just for the transmission. You can imagine my disappointment to find ACE 100 gears in it. A 97 I worked on had 95 gears in it. Just part of the mystery when working on a brand that so many parts inter...

Hodakaguy, it sounds like someone swapped out a 99/01/02 arm on your 03. If you post a picture we could tell you if that is so. BrianZ, I would like to see a pic of your 175 arm on your 97 as well. Sounds trick! As far as I can remember, the 03 arm is 1 1/8" longer. The rear shock mount on the ...

Re: Swingarms
I have a 03 swing arm on my late 97. I would use the 97 sprocket carrier. The stock wheel is a bolt on. The left shock will need at least the 03 bottom spacer and bolt. The top bolt depends on what shocks you use. You will also need the longer brake rod and brake stay. The other concerns are the cha...
