Re: Rear tire woes

Thought I"d post an update. I found a Maxxis rear tire in 100/90-17, installed width is 4.25". I think it was about sixty bucks, free shipping. It's a bit chunky but I don't ride this thing on the road hardly at all anyway.
Managed to spoon it on without ruining the tube. Whew!

Rear tire woes

What's the ratio for the 3.5x17 rear tire for a Road Toad? I'm having trouble finding a rear tire. Thanks.

Re: Probably a bit TOO lean...

Thanks for that. I didn't know they were the same. I've got my hands full this week but hope to deal with it after T-day.
According to the SH site, the .20 piston kit for a dirt squirt is available, but it says 80cc's. Is the DS a shorter stroke but same bore size?

Re: Probably a bit TOO lean...

This never locked up solid, I was running it pretty hard and it just kind of pooped out and wouldn't start. Even after i let it cool down I didn't have any compression. Piston is missing some material off the sides below the ring, that material is goobered onto the cylinder wall. I've had good luck ...

Re: Probably a bit TOO lean...

So the piston has what looks like 0.10 stamped on it and the cylinder has a +2 stamped on it. Nominally the bore is 1.975". What is the significance of the +2 on the cylinder block?

Re: Probably a bit TOO lean...

Should there be a mark on the piston that shows the size somewhere? I have no idea if this thing has been bored over yet. I could measure the bore but do I measure about 1" down from the top?

Re: Probably a bit TOO lean...

Update, the piston crown itself looks fine. Plug looks great. The bore, not so much. I didn't pull the actual cylinder off yet but I think it may not be bad. What specs do I need for the bore?

Re: Probably a bit TOO lean...

When I pulled off the road I tried kicking it over again and I had no compression. So I fear the worst. I was running it on the exact same needle position and premix ratio of the previous owner. He knew what he was doing; me, not so much I'm afraid. What if I pull the head and the piston crown is fi...

Probably a bit TOO lean...

Making a long story short, I think I ran my Road Toad too lean on the needle. Bike quit on me about 1/2 mile from home. Depending on what I find when I take the head off, can this just be a new piston and rings or do I need to go oversize? I hate being THAT guy...

Is it possible to still get one of these? For a Road Toad?

Re: I broked it. Might be in need of some parts.

I didn't use baling wire, no. I used some stainless lockwire I use for work. It seems fine now, the shifter lever itself I was able to weld back together and I suspect it had been failing for some time because now the shifting is crisp and there's no guessing involved, short of finding neutral but t...

Re: I broked it. Might be in need of some parts.

That's good news. I was able to wire the shifter housing back together and everything works great, the only thing I'm bummed about is the keyswitch.

I broked it. Might be in need of some parts.

So I took the Road Toad out today to explore some dotted lines on the map and apparently hit a rock or something (?) and the shift lever was broken inside somewhere. I was able to engage the clutch when off the bike and manipulate the lever in such a manner as to get into 3rd so I could get home eve...

Rode it around a bunch yesterday and still no clutch. Thinking I should go in there and separate the plates, clean 'em up.

Shifting issues? Road Toad

Big thanks to everyone with the non-running issues I've had. Runs and idles great now. I'm having issues with the clutch now. This is obviously a wet clutch but I don't know how it's supposed to work. This bike had been running when parked; when I opened the clutch cover the oil was basically a milk...

Should the pilot needle have a Viton tip? This one is just polished metal.

Re: Got me a road toad

Okay, I got it to run reliably, though at a fast idle. Turning the idle screw out all the way so the slide is down fully has no effect, but opening the petcock made it tolerable. Revs high when I blip the throttle or turn the handlebars. Choke will shut it down, so I know that works. I use that to s...

Re: Got me a road toad

After it starts I haven't opened the petcock. The revs climb too rapidly for me to consider giving it more fuel. The slide will bottom out with a clunk if the engine isn't running. I found that if I blip the throttle the rpms rise and don't really come back down. The throttle cable had been seized b...

Re: Got me a road toad

I have an update! Put in a clean plug, fired up on the first kick w/ the petcock shut off. NEW PROBLEM, however. It will start and run, and then it REALLY wants to run. Like 6 or 7,000 rpm run. Is this a crank seal problem or some other leak?

Re: Got me a road toad

Thanks, gents. All good ideas to try, for sure. I've not done anything since I walked away from it last night and landed here. A little more info: The points look to be new; since my friend bought the bike he had the cases apart to repair the crank, so I'm sure the crank seals are new. The points lo...

Got me a road toad

Hi all, So I picked up a Road Toad from my friend who moved away and couldn't take it with him. He had the crank rebuilt a couple years ago, and it was running when parked up sometime a little over a year ago I think. I took the carb apart, cleaned out the nasty old gas/wax etc out of it and cleaned...
