I broked it. Might be in need of some parts.

Post by Neptune »

So I took the Road Toad out today to explore some dotted lines on the map and apparently hit a rock or something (?) and the shift lever was broken inside somewhere. I was able to engage the clutch when off the bike and manipulate the lever in such a manner as to get into 3rd so I could get home eventually. I was about 2 or 3 miles off in the woods.
Nursed it home to find that the shift housing was also broken in about three pieces; most of this was an old fracture. The shift lever had also been repaired at some point. So I don't feel so bad after having used the bike up on my first outing.
I'm hoping to get the housing TIG'd up by a friend but failing that what are the odds of finding a replacement?
Sad thing, I also managed to break the key off in the ignition switch at the same time. That makes me sad, because it had an original Hodaka key fob on it, now it's off in the woods somewhere.

I would imagine Paul has most if not all those parts. He's got a basement full of used parts, and new upgrades if you go that route.

That's good news. I was able to wire the shifter housing back together and everything works great, the only thing I'm bummed about is the keyswitch.

Did you use bailing wire?.... I'm gonna jump on this wagon, fix it right, no excuse not to...

I didn't use baling wire, no. I used some stainless lockwire I use for work. It seems fine now, the shifter lever itself I was able to weld back together and I suspect it had been failing for some time because now the shifting is crisp and there's no guessing involved, short of finding neutral but that's not so bad. I ordered a new key from SH; I could turn the key on and off with a pair of pliers if I grabbed the stub sticking out of the lock but that finally broke off for good yesterday, so... That's that. Also had to get a new intake boot just because.
At some point I'll have the shift housing TIG'd up.
