Hi johnno
My understanding is they are non servicable.
Its possible to pull them apart to a degree but if they are worn out you get new ones,
There are good shocks available from SH and other suppliers that look original and function well .
there are also Progresive brand shocks that dont look completely original but offer better performance for vintage MX etc.

There is a small drive pin which prevents the upper mount from being un-screwed from the shock shaft. The drive pin can be driven out to allow removal of the upper mount. You MUST devise some means of holding the spring compressed (for safety) as the upper mount is removed.

PS: As already mentioned, you won't be able to re-build the shocks. Removing the upper mount and spring only provides a means to clean up things a little better cosmetically.

The shocks on my B+ looked about the same. I was amazed at how well a 2 foot long and 2 inch wide rag with a lot of Semi-Chrome paste made them look. Not museum quality, but pretty darn nice!

Hard to believe but a few minutes on a bench grinder with wire brush and these cleaned up nicely (not perfect but quite the transition). I didn't even pull them apart. They were badly pitted but they still don't look bad. Somewhat amazing. Check it out!

Another option us aluminum foil & water! The aluminum will remove the rust without scratching the chrome. The water just helps move things along. ;D Victor

Hey Maxie, I have a pair of shocks for a rider resto that look a lot like yours in the "before" picture. What type of wire wheel did you use on your bench grinder. I would think brass. Also, did you use any polishing compound and were the shocks dismantled prior to the wheeling and dealing? Thanks!

Best,

Matt
