Re: Stripped idle [pilot] jet removal
That’s a great tip. I recently had to remove a pilot jet from a BMW Bing carby for the same reason. I tried ezy outs but being brass, the ezy out just chipped and shaved the brass. I only got it out just before touching the carby body by really hammering the bit into the metal. I think the Allen key...

Re: Rear shock replacement
I replaced mine with a pair of cheapies from eBay. Just measure the eye to eye length BUT be careful of the spring diameter as Hodaka Ace springs are a small diameter and replacements can bind on the chain guard and muffler. I used a spacer to move one away from the chain guard and a knee to bend th...

Reed inlet
I’ve recently finished a complete rebuild of a 94 Wombat and it runs well. In the box of leftovers is a reed valve inlet. If I fit this to the bike without any change to carb or piston, will it have any effect? If I need to make modifications for it to work, what would they be. B6934FFD-F166-4C8C-B9...

Re: 1973 Combat Wombat Top End Specfications
When I’ve built Hodakas I’ve gone for .0045” clearance after heating both barrel and piston and measuring and comparing the expansion rates of both. I built a BSA B44 with a piston (JE) that had a recommendation of .0025”. It worked well for 4000 miles before I sold it. Ive heard of many other Brit ...

Re: Wombat vibration
I concur with Bullfrogs comment. I don’t recall a thread about vibration issues on this forum. I also don’t think I’ve seen a thread on cracked or broken frame/cycle parts either, which is a sure indication of vibration. I’ve got a #92 Ace 100 and also a #94 Wombat and I don’t notice any additional ...

Re: New Ace project
The fuel inlet on my Wombat came out which turned out to be lucky as it was completely blocked with mud and I hadn’t noticed before. I left it in my zinc plating bath for extra time to give it a good coat and build up the outside diameter. I then tapped it back into the carby with a brass drift and ...

Re: Ace 90 rear wheel bearing spacer
My Ace 100 had a thick spacer from memory. 2.5 mm seems about right. The length should be around about the same as the step in the hub where the bearings seat against plus the thickness of the washers. As I’ve written before, I always file a notch in each end of the spacer so I can rest a drift on t...

Re: Sometimes ya just gotta know...
Interesting discussion. I hadn’t thought about the different size balls and issue of off set “micro dents” but it makes sense. By the way, I’ve always heard of that denting referred to as Brinnelling. This is in honour of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, an English engineer who designed ships, bridges, Lond...

Wayne,
the tank looks Wombat to me. It’s got the grey filler cap and therefore a larger diameter filler than the earlier red cap models ie. Ace. v

Re: Wombat speedo
Hi, yes, everything turns nicely. I cleaned everything and used a light oil to re lubricate. It looks to me that the spring only controls the needle return and damping, not the actual speed. It looks like the magnet and drum controlled the accuracy of the needle. I guess the strength of the spring c...

Wombat speedo
Hi, I’ve been working on my 94 Wombat and was about to fit the speedo when I noticed that the needle was swung over to 100 and stayed there. There was also a load of spiderweb that I could see up the light fitting hole. I’d pulled an old Honda speedo apart after reading Bevman’s enlightening post so...

Re: Worth restoring? '73 Combat Womat
As the others have said, it looks complete. A full engine strip and rebuild should the the first job. Look closely at the piston as I understand standard size rings for most Hodakas are unobtainable so even if the bore and piston look good, you may need to go up a piston size if the rings are worn/s...

Re: Worth restoring? '73 Combat Womat
Hi Pete, I’m in Adelaide and restored an Ace and currently on a Wombat. They are expensive to restore over here as postage from USA is expensive and given our exchange rate, parts are very expensive. It’s very hard to find even second hand parts here. It was cheaper to buy a second bike and strip it...

Re: Please help with kickstart clip
I found a piece of tubing that was a good fit over the lever, and holding the lever in a vice I balanced the clip on top, held in place with the tubing. Then using a medium size hammer, just tapped it on. If you can’t get this clip on, never ever try to fit the clip on the control shaft. It’s the sa...

Re: Australian Wombat eats roots and leaves
Quiet times. I’ve stripped the rear Wombat wheel which required loads of heat to free the nipples. Now need to clean the spokes and nipples and Zn plate them. I’m going to be a good PO. I’ve ground recesses in the bearing spacer so the next owner can knock the bearing out easily. Picked this idea up...

Re: Australian Wombat eats roots and leaves
No huge concern, I wouldn’t class it as concerning as finishing an engine rebuild and finding a left over nut in the bottom of the tray. It’s just unlike the Japanese to leave a wire hanging without purpose. You expect it with a British bike ( I’ve got a Commando with a couple of great examples). Au...

Right, so I’ve sealed it over but next time the flywheel is off I’ll terminate it at the magneto.

Re: Australian Wombat eats roots and leaves
Hi everyone in hibernation. Could someone lower their mask enough to stop their glasses fogging up and come up with an answer to my electrical wiring question. I have just been neatening up my 94 Wombat wiring ( new sheathing, some new connectors, moving the condenser to under the tank) and found th...

Re: Australian Wombat eats roots and leaves
I’ve been trying to find a wiring diagram for the 94/94a. I think they used to be on the Strictly Hodaka site but I can’t find it any on the H-parts site. Does anyone know where to get a diagram?

Australian Wombat eats roots and leaves
I bought two lots of bike parts and luckily one was almost complete. The restoration is going well. Special thanks to Matt Glascock who sent me a lighting assembly. I think I’ve matched the original paint fairly well. I’ve also been building a Velocette and estimate I’ve spent 50 hours rebuilding th...

Re: Broken screw stuck
That bolt looks like there’s already a broken drill bit in there, which would account for it being tough to drill. If so, I’d grind the tip of a larger diameter drill flat - so it cuts out the remainder of the hole to a flat area. Then very very carefully use smaller drills bit by bit and drill arou...
