Model 95 Enduro Cross Reed Valve Jetting

Post by drbridge »

I am building a model 95 motor that has the enduro cross reed valve top end. I plan to use the stock 28mm carb. I am trying to find a base line for the jetting. If anyone has info on a good starting point it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Interestingly when I did a search of the forum I did not find any useful info on this subject, but in doing a google search it took me to some posts on the forum that are helpful. In one post Bullfrog mentions that a 240 main and 40 pilot might be a good starting point. In another post Rick Mott mentions that his CW with Reed Valve used a 270 Main. I think I will start with a 40 pilot and 280 main and tune from there. The carb I have is missing the needle so I think I will start with a 5d5 ( witch I think is standard) and see how it works. If anyone has anymore info, I am all ears.

I think you are on the right path as far as jetting goes. I know the Combat that Bullfrog has runs well. His pipe is a special built one (at least it used to be) and that can effect jetting slightly.
Just to add, if you list where you are (climate and elevation) it will also influence the jetting.

Forgot to mention that I am at 300 hundred feet above sea level. All of my Hodakas after jetting for this altitude have also run well at Hodaka days and I think Athena is around 2000 feet and Bad Rock ride gets close to 4000 up in the hills. My 92B+ sputtered a bit at the 4000 altitude but I kept it rung out and never fouled a plug.

The memory I had for proper jetting of a reeded Combat Wombat engine (which it seems may be wrong), came from my days wayeeee back in the previous century when I wuz riding just such an engine in the ISDT Qualifier events for several seasons.

While I'm appreciative of the comment about my current "ISDT" bike running well . . . and having a hand-built custom expansion chamber . . . none of that applies to the question about jetting a reeded Combat Wombat. Here's why. I'm running a "stock" - (er, um, sort of, kind of, stock) Piston Port induction Combat Wombat engine. So my actual current jetting is leaner than what is needed for a reeded engine with the same 28mm carb. And I'm not going to list those specs here cuz they simply don't apply to the question at hand and they would only put "known wrong" numbers out for the reading.

The comment about starting with a 280 main jet, sounds like a proper selection -- probably rich (the right thing to do). BUT FIRST - dial in the pilot jet per the instructions in the Official Hodaka Workshop Manual. FIRST. Yes. Then move on to other things. Did I mention, do the pilot jet FIRST?
