Air filter setup for 97

Post by oochaDog »

Hello all - I'm looking for ideas for an air filter for a 97. I don't have the element cover nor have I purchased the filter and cage yet. I'm wondering how others have setup their system if they didn't have the element cover. I can just cut a round piece of metal/plastic, but not sure what to attach it to, to hold the filter. Is that what the spring is for in the diagram? Any pointers or pics of your setup would help to out a ton.

Thanks Jay

You can definitely cut your own. I have one that was made from heavy aluminum.

Thanks Dale - How did you secure your aluminum element cover to hold in the filter?

Cut a circle with dog ears. Drill a hole in each dog ear and use the oem springs to secure it in place.

Jay,
I was servicing a 98 Super Rat today and while I had it apart, I took some pictures. These might be helpful should you decide to fabricate your own.

I raced a HIGHLY modified 97 and to keep things simple, increase airflow and double the breathable filter area, I believe I used a stock KDX 200 filter with the internal birdcage. It fit in the SC air box configuration with no mods. The stock setup requires air to turn 90 degrees before entering carb throat. I held the cage in place with a single spring stretched across the face. I found the cage on eBay and Moose or No Toil supplied the KDX foam filter. Not stock if that's what you are going for, but a simple way to greater air filter area..
