I was riding today and noticed aluminum dust on my rear brake plate. Upon further inspection I could see if was rubbing against the drum. Any thoughts why?

I just replaced the bearings and the seals last week. I should have mentioned that. I’ll be pulling the rear wheel off today to inspect it, but I’m 99% sure everything has been installed correctly.

hmmmm, OK . . . bent axle?

? forgot to reinstall the spacer tube between the hub bearings???

??? Wrong bearings? Sounds silly I know but, I once got a set of bearings for the front wheel from the local NAPA store. I gave him the bearing number (6201) . . . and he gave me some 6201 bearings EXCEPT these had a 1/2" center hole (not the metric sized hole I was after). The wheel was a bit floppy on the axle with those bearings (didja notice how far I got before I noticed the problem??)

I’ll check the axle when I pull the wheel. Spacer is installed. Hoping I got the correct bearings from Hodaka parts. I compared them before the reinstall. The seals went in almost too easy.

I had this happen on a 1970 Hodaka. The Axle was bent. Your Model is so burly that the Rim will Taco first! Joe.

. . . and I hope this isn't it - check the "tower" which contains the bearing on the brake side for cracks.

I’m wondering if I got these two bearings reversed in the drum section. Or does it make a difference? Axle is straight.

So I looked at the old bearings and lo and behold, there were two thin washers stuck to it. One on each side. Removed the new bearing and inserted the washers and it no longer rubs. Crises averted. Thanks for the guidance.

Great stuff here guys. Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving. A good refresher/review of the Wombat wheel mounting department. Happy ending. Its all there. Thanks.

If you’ve still got the spacer out, it’s a good time to file 2 small u shape recesses on one end. It helps when next time you knock the bearings out as a drift will fit in the gap.
