Rear brake light switch -replacements?

Post by dnaj11 »

Has anyone found a suitable replacement for the stop light switches for a Road Toad? I don't seem to find any universal square-ish looking one to fit where the OEM one could go and I am not too nuts about using a Lucas style from Emgo. OEM hodaka new replacements are just too pricy for a driver. Mine is simply missing.

Try J&P Cycle. They have several styles and brands:

Yeah, I was looking for a more square type version that bolts to the original mounting plate. Someone did turn up a source for an aftermarket golf cart square switch that was a direct bolt in, but that eBay seller doesn't list them anymore. Wondering if anyone turned up a similar specific application for the square switches . . . or do we give up and go to the cylinder ones with an L -shaped bracket mounted on the original plate? Or?

Okay. How about this one?

For the price of a switch you get a brake backing plate as well......

Maybe . . . Was hoping for more of those golf cart replacements but this might do. Thanks!

Bruce Young can be a good resource for parts like these. They are interchangeable from Model to model and he's always bringing home "finds" to part out! Bruce can be reached at

I found this one, $10 + $4 shipping from the UK. Looks like it'd be a pretty easy unobjectionable replacement for the old square switches.

That's a very nice find. Good work searching.
If I were looking for one I'd certainly order at that price.

Hi Hodaka Nation

My front brake light switch broke on my 92B+ and i found this old discussion topic. I reached out to Bruce Young and he hooked me up with a replacement. Thank you Bruce!

Can these be repaired?

Has anyone tried to source other replacement switches?

I’d been looking for a front brake switch replacement for my Ace 100 for about a week locally here in Denver to no luck. I ended up ordering the one that dnaj11 linked, but the round pole version instead of that oval tab. Still in the mail so can’t tell you how it lines up. But at like $18.50 all together, it’s worth a shot. Looks pretty damn similar to the original. Kinda. That spring is a no go I’m sure.

Yes, that switch will work fine. I've had one for a few years until I found a NOS switch to replace it. You may need a slightly stiffer spring than the original Hodaka spring though, ("Ace is the place...").

Thanks guys!

brad100! What do you mean " .... but the round pole version instead of that oval tab." I just saw the one version.

I assume you will mount this switch to the original mounting plate. Is that right? How are you going to do that? You will have to drill new hole, then pop rivet?

Here’s what I meant, attaching a couple pictures. I went with the brass colored “round pole” one, but I’m sure they function identically. Mounting will be the other hurdle, but I’m sure with some light modification I can get it to stay put. I do plan on using the original mounting plate. This is for my daily driver/commuter so I’m not too hung up on finding a NOS replacement or eBaying a *hopefully working* used one. As long as it works, and is cheap, I’m happy!

PS, I’d be more tempted to try out the one that Makotosun linked. It’s about $5 less and ships from the United States. Looks to be the same.

Ah! yes, I see ... thank you.

Let me know how that goes. I ordered the one that Makotosun linked to. I'll give it a try. I'm going to use the old mounting plate, some how ...

I will gladly report back, though with international shipping you may beat me to the punch! Might look for a “mounting plate” at Ace if the original one doesn’t work out, or just have my metal fab buddy give me a piece of scrap to drill holes in.

Hi! I received my switches earlier this week. They look pretty similar. I'm going to try and make a base plate this weekend. Sure wish I had a mill and a lathe

I've got a pretty good mini mill. But I don't see how it'd be much help.

Looks like a way to go MIGHT be to drill out the existing rivets, take off the existing plate, JB Weld it to a small rectangle of 'thin" aluminum flat stock and "machine" it to fit.

I also have one of those Seig 7x16 lathes. My advise on that: don't buy one..... Junk!

Spend the $1200 on anything else. Even alcohol.

If you have a good sketch of what you want, send it to me. I'll try for free, but there's nothing to hold onto unless the switch is attached. The work has to be held in a vice to machine it.

Why don't you just mount the new switch onto the old Hodaka backing plate? You will have to drill new holes in the backing plate to accept the new switch (and might have to angle it a bit for clearance), but it is easier than trying to re-invent the wheel.
