Wombat / super rat coils

Post by Ed-de »

I have two wombat one being a(94a) and the other wombat with combat engine. When i pulled of both magneto's one had the three coils with the copper winding around each one which has two and a plug with four wires and the other has one coil wrap in copper and the other two have no copper winding. I also have a super rat that has only two coils instead of three, one coil with copper winding and the other not wrap with copper it also has two wires. Is that normal for the two wire magneto's to have winding only on one of the coils ? A bit confused. I have a pic there of the two wombat magneto's

In the photo you posted, the stator assembly with 3 copper wound coils is from a Wombat. The stator assembly with 1 copper wound coil and 2 bare coil cores is from a Combat Wombat.

The Combat Wombat did not have a provision for lights . . . but the two coil cores provide for balanced magnetic forces. (If only one coil/coil core were mounted, the magnets in the flywheel would repel/attract on ONLY one side of the circle of rotation -- ie, not balanced forces.)

You can compare the wires on the Wombat stator to the Wombat wiring diagram available right here on the Strictly Hodaka website to see just what wires connect to what. The Black wire and Blue wire which come from the ignition source coil/points/condenser are ALL the wires you need to have connected in order for the engine to run. ALL the other wires are part of the lighting/battery charging/horn power system.

ooopsie. . . . and the chrome tank Super Rat stator assy. had one copper wound coil (ignition source coil) and one bare coil core. Again, the bare coil core provides for balanced magneto forces when the flywheel magnets are spinning past the coil and bare coil core.
