Broken Petcock

Post by megawat »

Have a 1970 Ace 100, original brass petcocks look great but leak so ordered a set of the newer type thinking the design was less likely to leak. Installed with new seals and one snapped off at threads as I was snugging it up. Looks like pot metal. Does anyone know what the original material was?

Don't matter what there made of, don't over tighten and don't try to get that last 1/4 turn because you want the thing indexed right. Take the time and sand the washer to get the extra turn.

Sand down the washer? First I heard of that -- but it's a good idea.

Same thing happened to me, I drilled out the threaded and the body peices and tapped to 1/4 20 thread, center drilled a piece of threaded rod and screwed the two peices together, using locktite. Still holding, no leaks, don't over tighten.

I've been making slow progress on the Wombat but sanding the original washers/seals was my solution, too. Several tries but they line up well now. Not perfect, but ..............
