96 Dirt Squirt engine questions
96 Dirt Squirt engine questions
I picked up a 96 Dirt Squirt at Hodaka Days and l’m getting ready to get her fixed up.
It got it as shown in the picture. Pretty complete except missing cylinder, head and carburetor. I picked up a good head and cylinder at Hodaka Days.
The engine number that came with the bike is P-53289. According to Hodaka Parts, Inc. the starting engine number for the model 96 is P-62366. So it looks like I have an Ace 100 engine?
My question is; what are the differences in the Ace and Dirt Squirt engines?
Thanks.

Re: 96 Dirt Squirt engine questions
The main differences are in the gearing, The Dirt Squirt had the same internal gear clusters as the Combat Wombat (which is also the same as the Wombat, except for the Wombat has an overdrive 5th gear) and it has a different primary gear set. Aside from that, the engines are pretty much the same. If you count the gear teeth for each gear you can determine which gear set you have.
Ace 100 & Model 93 Super Rat Gears: 35x10, 30x14, 27x18, 25x21 and 23x23.
Ace 100 primary gears: 19x69.
Model 96 Dirt Squirt Gears: 31x9, 28x12, 25x15, 22x18 and 20x20.
Dirt Squirt primary gears: 23x65.
Ace 100 & Model 93 Super Rat Gears: 35x10, 30x14, 27x18, 25x21 and 23x23.
Ace 100 primary gears: 19x69.
Model 96 Dirt Squirt Gears: 31x9, 28x12, 25x15, 22x18 and 20x20.
Dirt Squirt primary gears: 23x65.
Re: 96 Dirt Squirt engine questions
Thanks dirty-rat
I was able to confirm from the info you posted that the gears 1-5 are ace 100.
What puzzles me is the primary gears, I’m counting 17-63.

Re: 96 Dirt Squirt engine questions
Guessing that the 17/63 gears are straight cut? If so, then from a model 93 Super Rat.

Yes, the gears are straight cut.
Re: 96 Dirt Squirt engine questions
Those primary gears would be from the model 93 or 93A Super Rat (the 93B used a 21/59 gear set). Which, with the transmission gears you have (the Ace 100 and the model 93 Super Rats had the same internal gears, just different primary gears) would be the same as a model 93 and 93A Super Rat. The Super Rat primary gears are also much stronger than the Ace primary gears.
Re: 96 Dirt Squirt engine questions
The 96 Squirts uses a Wombat bottom end with an Ace crank, flywheel, cylinder, piston & head. So you could use the Wombat gears if you want it to be correct. Also a Wombat kick lever because it sits in a Wombat frame with an E frame number. Same frame as the 94/95 and it also uses the same 2 gallon tank as the 95 Combat Wombat! I have 2 of them to restore! Victor

Re: 96 Dirt Squirt engine questions
Thanks guys.
I think I will use the gears I have. I will be taking the engine to Hodaka Ron in the next few days for him to work his magic. Ron has a set of cases with the correct Dirt Squirt numbers that we will use.
In the meantime I have started cleaning up parts and preparing for painting.
This is my winter project. It should be ready for next Hodaka Days.
