Publishing Confusion

Post by viclioce »

Hi there folks. Just looking for confirmation.

We were comparing main shafts because Alan asked me if the Ace & Wombat used the same main shaft. So I looked it up in Terry’s library. Ace & Wombat use different main shafts, which makes sense because the gearing is different.

Then I thought about the Dirt Squirt and told Alan since the Squirt has a Wombat tranny, per Ed & others in the past, that it should have the same main shaft as the Wombat. But, the library lists it as the same as the Ace. So, I’m guessing this is a publishing error??? Here’s the main shaft specs from the Hodaka-Parts library on all 3 models.

So I’m guessing this is a publication error and they published the Ace specs for the 96 Dirt Squirt? I haven’t opened up my Model 96’s yet. So confirmation would be nice.

So, does the 96 Squirt have the Wombat main shaft & gears or the Ace main shaft & gears? I’m not ready to pull one apart just to look & see.

Thanks! :ugeek: Victor

I just checked the part numbers and they all look the same except the Ace has 92 as the first 2 digits while the Wombat & Squirt have 94 as the first 2 digits. One could almost assume they are the same except for the prefix on the part number. But we know the Ace & Wombat are different. :ugeek: Victor

Houston can we find a problem ? I thought the 96 dirt squirt was also called a 92C??it would have 92 parts?? There were 3 dirt squirts produced right ? I guess I can't see any problem I would think the model 96 would start with a 92 motor part number. ------------ Clarence

At 10:30 tonight I discovered that I left the lights on out in the shed - and decided to do something more useful than just turning out the lights.

On review of my archived 1970's era printed Illustrated Parts Lists, I found the following countershaft/mainshaft tooth counts, with the countershaft gear listed first and the main shaft gear listed second and in 1st thru 5th order:

Wombat (94, 94A) 31/9 - 28/12 - 25/15 - 22/18 - 19/20
Dirt Squirt (92C, 96) 31/9 - 28/12 - 25/15 - 22/18 - 20/20
Combat Wombat (95) 31/9 - 28/12 - 25/15 - 22/18 - 20/20

The mainshaft part number for all three engines is 924601. (Sorry, I didn't write down the part numbers for the counter shaft gears - but they are the same in all three transmissions except for the 19 and 20 tooth 5th gears)

Ed, minor error in your post. The part number for the mainshafts on the Wombat model 94&94a; the Dirt Squirt model 92C&96 and the Combat Wombat model 95 should be 944500. The Ace 100 models and the various model 93 Super Rats had mainshaft # 924500.

Victor, the spec sheet at hodaka-parts.com for the model 96 Dirt Squirt is the wrong sheet. It is actually the sheet from the Ace 100 B and B+ (look at the wheel sizes, etc.) The model 96 Dirt Squirt used the same transmission (1st - 5th gears) as the model 95 Combat Wombat. The Dirt Squirt did use a different primary gear from all the other Hodaka's. If you look at the parts diagrams it shows the correct parts and part #'s there.

DOH! Yer right! I wrote down the part number for the COUNTERshaft - when I meant to write down the number for the MAINshaft. The proper part number for MAINshaft for all three models is 944500. Sorry for the error (and for adding to the publishing confusion).

One of the very few things I disliked about racing the Combat Wombat was the close ratio difference between 4th & 5th. A bit 'longer legs' in cross country races would have been nice.

. . . and it would have been easy to change that. Just swap in the 19 tooth counter shaft gear from the Wombat (5th), and, voila, you have an "over-drive" 5th gear!

I run an ace 100 primary gear set with a 56 tooth
rear sprocket in my model 96 dirt squirt. I use it primarily for woods walkin.
The only thing that worries me about it is the extra stress it puts on the starter but I have been running it that way for eight years and haven’t broken anything yet.

The kick starter system got a pretty good test (tens of thousands of engines) with the ACE era primary gear ratios. No problem using 'em in a Dirt Squirt engine (which is essentially an ACE 100 engine with a few tweeks). No reason to lose any sleep about stress on the kick start system.

OK. I thought there was a publication error. Not sure who brought in the 95? I thought the 96 Dirt Squirt had a Wombat bottom end not a Combat Wombat??? Clarification on that??? I’ll talk to Terry about the 96 Squirt library sheet. :ugeek: Victor

I did notice while on the Hodaka-Parts dot com website, that the first page of the Dirt Squirt (96) specifications - very near the top - lists that the specs are indeed Ace 100 specs. So, yes, publication error.

Yep. I messaged Terry and asked if it was just a mistake? Expressed concern about some folks accidentally ordering the incorrect parts. Discussions on the past with Bruce leads me to believe that not as many people use the library as you would think. He keeps telling me to say/show where the info I copy & paste comes from when I post on the Hodaka Fan Club page.

Just go to the Website Owned by Terry Larson (HPI). Go to the Schematics for the Model 96. 100% correct. I have a 1973 Dirt Squirt . Simple simple simple to figure out. Joe

Yes, the "schematics" (Illustrated Parts List) is correct for the Model 96 Dirt Squirt - but the "Specifications" are not correct for this model.

I see that the factory model of the 92B+ starts with frame number A67613, which is correct with my records. Clarence
