Advice on pricing Hodaka Ace 100...

Post by gpalidwor »

I recently inherited my fathers old dirt bike: a Hodaka Ace 100, S/N A34240.
pics here: https://secure.flickr.com/photos/gawp/s ... 605309538/
Driven until 1973, light use (Mileage 1014 miles).
Put into basement and stored after that in dry conditions.
Very good condition but not driven again after that. All original parts.
I think it would take minimal work to get it running again.
Would like to sell as-is, am located in Ottawa, Canada.
I would appreciate recommendations as to a reasonable price to ask and appropriate place to sell it?

Thanks

Your bike looks to be in pretty good shape, a nice example of an early Ace 100. Do you have an ownership for it? Proper paperwork adds to the value. Does the engine turn over or is it stuck? Are there any dents in the tank, and is the chrome good? (It's hard to tell from the pictures). Does it have the tool kit and air pump?

I'm in Southern Ontario (near Guelph) and the market for Hodakas seems to be pretty fickle. I watched a decent running Dirt Squirt sit for around a year on Kijiji at $800. A really complete Road Toad (non-running) with the signal lights, brake light switches, etc, listed at $350 recently sold (the seller had to lower the original asking price of $500). I would hazard a guess of around $800 - $1000 for your bike, but it really depends on whether you can find an interested buyer with cash. If you could spend a little time to get it running it would make it a lot easier to sell.

Brian's correct, if it runs and has paperwork, that adds value. Title alone is worth $100 minimum. The area you're in, time of year, current market conditions are all factors in what you could get out of it. If you're not in a hurry, watch e bay and other sites to come up with a value. List it right here on Pauls site, if it heads south, I can help with transport thru the states if needed. It's a wait and see game, play it well.

Thanks for the helpful advice!

I do have an ownership for it, and the chrome is in great shape, engine turns over and there are no dents in the tank. Does not have tool kit and air pump (or I don't think it does; what does the air pump look like?).

In general, what is the best time of year to sell and how much of a difference does it make in price?
I can wait to sell if it makes a big difference.

the air pump might be under the gas tank just take a look under there for it you don't have to take the tank off to see it. if it has that it will add to the price too Scott

Use the "Hodaka Marketplace" to place your ad (don't do it here in the forum). You get to the advertisement section on this site by clicking on "Board Index" at the left bottom of the screen (or near the left top). Then click on "Hodaka Marketplace" and place your ad. You can upload pictures in the ad by using "Full Editor". Go for it.

Generally, bikes sell best in the springtime when potential buyers start thinking about riding. I'm not sure that this applies to older bikes like your Ace 100 though. Any of the people I know that are into vintage bikes are quite happy to buy in the winter, or any other time of the year when a potential project appears for sale.

The tire pump is a small hand pump that mounts to the horizontal frame tube just under the gas tank. It looks like a typical older bicycle pump.

I have used Kijiji to seel bikes in the past. Just be prepared for people (mostly kids) wasting your time asking for "more pics", or offering to trade for an old Playstation. Of course, list it on this site as bchappy has already stated.

Cool old picture of your dad on the bike! I like the white T-shirt, rolled up jeans, and 60's style helmet.

Nice easy restore.Your Dad must have loued that bike. I noticed that the tires are Knobby's he changed them. Why don't you redo the bike and enjoy what all of us and your father did.? I got back into old bikes when my Father in law gave me his 1964 Ace 90 he bought new. I restored it and My wife digs it.
Also it had the Air Pump under the tank.

Decide what you want for the bike... add 10 to 15% to give you room to dicker, and then stick to it. Don't give it away if it doesn't sell in the first week or so, you may have to be patient to find your buyer, or for your buyer to find you.

Folks are looking for projects all the time you could be missing out on potential buyers all along. You could stop by a old bike shop and ask if there is a handy person around that could help you get it running. I would bolt the handle bars on and hear it run does it have spark? Even if it runs with a shot of gas from a oil can running is running well at least out west. We all wish we had another non running project to work on even if we have seven already .--------------Clarence
