balancing flywheels

looking at the flywheels out of my 03 wombats i noticed, i assume , the balancing drill marks. can somebody expand on this thought ? how is it done ? how precise does it need to be ? thanks ...albert

I think you are correct, If it were spinning 350 rpm not t big a deal. At 7,000 *8,000 * 9,000 Very big deal. Way beyond me. ------------ Clarence

The flywheels went through the balancing process at the Kokusan Denki factory prior to shipment and assembly on engines, so I'd have to assume there was no consideration of balancing to match/compensate for an individual engine. I can only guess as to how they went about the balancing procedure. It should be a "one and done" process though - balanced for life unless damaged.

I only asked because the one with three drill marks looks professional the other one looks like I did it with a dull bit very rough

I zoomed in on the photo and can clearly see what you mean . . . they got ALL the life there was out of that drill bit! The other flywheel has a lightly "rolled edge" on each balancing hole - so that drill was on its way out too. It is interesting to me that de-burring the balancing holes was apparently "not a thing" - too slow/expensive I guess (with no direct detriment or positive effect, I guess I get it . . . sort of, kind of, maybe . . . )

I suppose all the metal lost through corrosion since has thrown it back out of whack.

??? Twenty year soak of the bottom quarter of the fly wheel to balance the previous soak of the top quarter??? (Um, I don't think that's gonna buff out. )

You'd really need to time the "turnover" perfectly and hit the Evaporust on a dime to keep the balance in check. Ultra-shade tree fly wheel MX conversion?

Con's: Takes FOREVER, utterly uncontrollable results, no progress on re-build for 20 years . . .

Confounder: Luck. The Step 2 flood stage needs to be exactly 4.1253" higher than Step 1 to get the high water marks aligned properly. Kind of a long shot but the above evidence suggests do-ability.

I wuz starting to worry that the original questioners on this thread might (just maybe) start to think that this particular group of Hodaka responders could be ever-so-slightly goofy.
