NGK B8HS discontinued

Post by Tether »

The B8HS has been discontinued and replaced with the BR8HS a resistor plug. I has always been my understanding that resistor pugs were not a good choice with the old points ignition.
Comments please.

The B8HS is listed on ebay about 780, times must be a few left. --------------- Clarence

I ordered 10 from someone on EBay. They arrived today and they were BR8HS. Even though the listing clearly said “B8HS NON-RESISTOR” so before ordering be sure to confirm with the seller what you will be getting.

I use An Autolite XS4092DP as a replacement for B8HS. The plug is a fine wire center electrode non resistor. I use it as a replacement for the B8S also but with two copper sealing washers in place to correct for reach. It is more expensive than a standard plug but I have run one (and only one) in my model 96 for about 7 years now.
I have used them in my 1970 Yamaha R5 for three years now. Both engines run electronic ignition and are tuned well.

Considering the resistance of the air gap, the 5K or so resistance in the plug is pretty insignificant. As yet I have not seen any downside to a resistor plug. While it's only 'common sense' that adding resistance would result in a weaker spark, in practice the reverse may be true.

If your motor runs the same with a resistor plug, then what's the worry? Is this a real or an imagined worry? Resistors had everything to do with radio interference and that was it.

I'm open to being educated on why we don't want resistor plugs. They may be less desirable on old Ace90 magnetos - maybe - but if resistance is your worry, try putting your ohm meter probes about .024 apart and see what it reads.
