VM20 Ace Carb

Post by viclioce »

Hello everyone! I’m working on this new to me Ace carb, a stock VM20. Most of it was there but not all.

I put in a stock size 95 Main Jet, & it has a stock #25 pilot jet. I also had a couple of really nice 20mm 2.0 stock slides. It was missing the cap & spring, #5 the throttle adjuster, all of which I had in my carb parts box!

But I’m still missing #9 the throttle adjuster, #10 the throttle adjuster spring, #11 the throttle bar, #12 the cotter pin, #13 the jet needle #4F6, #14 the needle clip & #15 the needle jet spring seat.

Is there anyone out there who has these parts they can spare? Condition usable is all I ask, so I can rebuild this carb to specs! I can also offer a swap for something like carb floats, main jets, other size needles, VM 24 bowl gaskets, etc. for VM 24 carbs and some spare slides as well!

Let me know if you can spare any of these parts. Otherwise it’s probably better for me to purchase a complete used carb. These parts will run around $35 plus about $7-10 shipping to buy them new, IF they are available in stock!

Let me know! Thanks! :ugeek: Victor

On the topic of VM20 carbs, will the new Mikuni VM20 carbs work on the Ace 100b+ models? The original 20mm carbs appear to be scarce. Have only seen the new ones on ebay.

The originals are flange Mount. The new VM20’s you see are not flange mount. Do you would need an adapter. :ugeek: Victor

The only mounting difference I can see between the original and the newer is that the newer ones have a slotted flange mount and the originals have holes in the flange. My nest question would be: does anyone use a newer Mikuni 20mm carb on their Ace 100s?

If you’re finding a slotted flange mount, that should work! :ugeek: Victor

Strictly Hodaka had a special manifold adapter to match the New 20mm mikuni to the iron Ace cylinder.
It was a specialty casting.
The distance between the mounting studs is much smaller on the Ace cylinder than the New 20mm mikuni.
I tried to machine up an adapter, but I found it un-workable.
I believe the specialty casting that Strictly Hodaka offered is an option, but it's expensive.

Al, the studs on the manifold I have are 40mm center to center, and the newer carbs measure 49mm, so I suppose I may have to get an adapter or else continue looking for an original 20mm carb. Thanks for that info. I didn't know they made an adapter.

Jack. Do you still have the old carb? Are there parts available from it? If so, may be able to send you a VM20, minus a few parts like the slide and needle and idle adjuster. Let me know. :ugeek: Victor

Victor is probably on the shortest path. Collect some VM 20's, used, partials or completes and try building a whole one from what you can find, sorta cheap.

If you're willing to throw some fairly serious money at this, go for a two bolt Reed manifold and a vm22. You'd want the cylinder modified for boost ports..... It goes on and on down this path.

If there's a low budget way other than scrounging up used stuff I couldn't find it for my ace.

I think the adapter Strictly Hodaka offered was north of $200 alone. You might ask hodaka_parts.com about it. I think they control strictly Hodaka's inventory now.

Victor, thanks for your offer, but the original owner had cobbled together a reed-valve set-up with a 24mm carb, but the cylinder was no good. I have an original cylinder/head/manifold and need a carb to match up. The part that Al mentions may be just what I'm looking for, if I can figure out how it mounts. (I'm getting old. Can somebody please draw me a picture) lol Thanks, guys.

If the cobbled up Reed valve setup that came with the old cylinder was a two bolt unit with 40mm center to center spacing you might have your setup right there.

The manifold I linked to is for attaching a "clamp on" type carb to an Ace cylinder.

There are several clamp on carbs available in the hundred bucks range that just might fit. If Hodaka parts can give you the diameter of the "tube" you clamp onto you could take a chance that way.

$130 plus a clamp on foam air cleaner could get you running.

Also, a 24 mm spigot mikuni, if that's what you've got, is worth a piece of money itself. If you've got one hold onto it.

Ace carb & manifold 001.JPG
Hey fellas, here is a pic of the reed valve manifold minus the reeds. It has the 40mm spacing where it mounts to the cylinder and measures 49mm where the carb mounts. The carb pictured has an inside diameter of 24mm, so I'm assuming it's a 24mm Mikuni if I'm measuring correctly.

The two bolt Reed valve unit is a valuable item, if you have the Reed cage that goes with it.

The 24 mm carb if it's complete is also valuable.

I would use both.

If you don't have the Reed cage that goes with the 2 bolt manifold, that's a problem. But if you do have it

1 keep it

2 use it.

3 put a clamp on foam air cleaner on the 24mm carb & go.

Is this what you have on hand?

I have the reed cage and also have a new Wiseco piston that came as an extra with the bike. It was meant for a reed valve setup, I believe. (has 6 holes on one side). I don't know what the stock piston is supposed to look like. I don't intend to do any porting to the cylinder and since I eventually plan to sell the bike, would prefer to keep it as stock as possible. Therefore, it goes back to my original intent, which was to find a carb (and piston) that will work for this bike. Selling the extra parts I have should more than make up for what I should have to pay for a carb and piston.(if I can find them that is).

You can view the stock non Reed pistons at hodaka_parts.com. I think you're looking at $150.

I expect they have the stock manifold, new or used.

The VM 20, only thing I know to do is keep an eye on eBay. May have to buy a couple to put together one.

Also try Bruce at Hodaka parts.com Idaho. He seems to specialize in used parts for 100cc Hodakas. He may have a piston for you as well as some carbs. Probably has the stock intake manifold too.

Al, I already had the stock manifold on hand, plus the stock cylinder and head, so the carb and piston are what I'll need. Thanks for your help. Victor, I just may take you up on your offer after all. I'll send you a pm. Matt, did you happen to come up with anything? Thanks guys. By the way, if anyone on here is interested, in case you have a 20mm carb, I do have a lot of model 97/98 parts to trade, plus a model 93 cylinder head, along with the above mentioned parts that I won't be using.

Sorry Jack, I've been jammed up starting a new job. I will check tomorrow. Just so I know for sure, you are looking for a flange mount carb for an Ace 100 B+?

Bad news here, Jack. I have two spigot mount 20s and a flange mount 20 for a 4-stroke but nada on the carb you are looking for. I do have one more place to check - long shot. I would also suggest contacting Hodaka Dave (Hodaka Dave's Vintage Service). I'm sorry Jack.

No problem, Matt. If all else fails, I might just try using the part that Al mentioned (Inlet manifold 913504R for 22mm carb) and get one of those carbs. Then its off to hunt for a piston. Thanks.
