Hodaka 100
Hello all,
my name is Marty and I am new to the forum. I am 51 years old and have been doing post vintage AHRMA events in cross country the past 2 years.
I live in birmingham, about 20 mi. from the Barbers Motorsports Park. I currently ride a 85' Yamaha IT 200 for post vintage, but have been looking for a 100cc Hodaka to do the vintage class. My dad road Wombats in the 70s and have always been fond of the brand. I really would like to locate a bike somewhere in the southeast so I could avoid shipping charges. Price; I would like to stay under the thousand $ mark if at all possible. I know this greatly limits me, but if someone knows of such a bike preferably in the southeast, please let me know.
Thanks, and have a blessed day

Re: Hodaka 100
Marty, are you looking for a Wombat only?
Re: Hodaka 100
Ed, I think he is looking for a 100cc. He said his dad rode Wombats.

Bill, I don't think that's Ed. Take a close look at the "handle." 'Fraid I see more possible identity confusion coming down the pike, which is unfortunate.

You guys are right. Bulfrog with one "L" just joined this morning.

Re: Hodaka 100
So back to the thread at hand...
Which 100 do you want to race? My brother races a Model 96 Dirt Squirt in AHRMA Cross Country. We will be at White Lightning on 15 March. You going to be there? If so, swing by and chat with us. I am on my PE250B - 'cause it runs circles around my Hodakas... Number 39F and he will be on his Squirt.

Sorry guys to throw a wrench into things. I came up with Bulfrog with one L because I'm a Bultaco person at heart.

I had a road toad for a very short time. I'm a Bultaco person. So I used the Bul and was going to use the word toad but Bultoad didn't sound right so hence bulfrog

Re: Hodaka 100
Based on your limited initial description of goals/limits, I'd suggest a Road Toad/Late Squirt (models 99,01,01). They are relatively available/affordable, offer improved brakes, reed valves & primary kick & can be readily modified to match the specs of a (theoretically) more powerful (yes, pipey, too) later Rat (model 98), which is usually pricier & scarcer.
If you are a member of the Hodaka Club (only $24/year), you can review the most recent issue for some great stuff about modifying the 99-02 bikes - there was a special section on that very subject.

Re: Hodaka 100
Has there ever been a formal "Like Design" determination made for the POST 1974 Hodaka 100s? One can argue that the 100s built up to 1974 are NOT like design to the 100s built after 1975. Frames and engines completely different.
I do not care one way or the other but I was just wondering if that has been raised in the AHRMA World. We race a 96 Squirt without reed so it is NO issue for us.... IF and I mean IF this was even an issue, it would only be at a AHRMA National. I know our region does not split hairs like this. I am just throwing this out there for information since the question was asked. BTW, I agree that the 99,01,02 engine would be the best one to go with for 100cc Cross Country IMHO. BTW, I am building a "special" bike (below) using a Rickman Zundapp frame and late model Squirt engine that Intend to race in Vintage Cross Country LoL
Here are the rules from the BOOK that you can get for free of the AHRMA site.
15.1 CLASSES
15.1.1 VINTAGE: In most aspects, machine eligibility and other requirements mirror those
of AHRMA vintage motocross (Section 11), with the exception being engine displacement, as defined below. The minimum age for riders is 16years.
Each of the following classes is further divided into Novice, Intermediate and Expert skill-levels.
a) 100cc:
88-100cc two-stroke and 88-120cc four-stroke production motorcycles manufactured as up to 1974-model-year machines, and like-design.
All motorcycles in this class must have been manufactured 100cc-or-smaller-displacement bikes.
11.1.5
100cc MOTOCROSS:
88-100cc two-stroke and 88-120cc four-stroke production motorcycles manufactured as up to 1974-model-year machines, and like-design.
All motorcycles in this class must have been manufactured 100cc-or-smaller-displacement bikes.
Eligible machines include:
Bridgestone
Bultaco Lobito or Sherpa S
DKW
Hodaka 90 or 100
Honda CT90 or CB/CL/SL/XL100
Indian
Kawasaki 90 or 100
Moto Beta
Penton
Rickman-Hodaka
Sachs
Suzuki TC/TS90 or TS/TM100
Van Tech frames with any eligible engine
Yamaha YL1E, HT1, LT2 or DT/MX100
Zundapp
a) Engine displacement can be increased to class limit, plus allowable overbore.
b) Engines may use six-speed transmissions if OEM-equipped on that particular machine. Six-speed conversions are not permitted.
c) Electronic ignitions and reed-valves are allowed.
d) Aftermarket frames are limited to those listed, pending approval of the Rules & Eligibility Committee.
e) Engine/frame combinations must be as manufactured; no mixing-and-matching of
engines and chassis into “specials.”
f) Hubs and forks from any 1974 or earlier production motorcycle are permitted.
g) Honda four-strokes are limited to the one-piece cylinder head. No major engine
components from 125cc engines are allowed.

Re: Hodaka 100
Model 99/01/02 as like design was addressed back when the 100cc class was started in AHRMA.
I would disagree that the 99/01/02 are completely different from a model 98. The frames are nearly identical except for the air box kicker tubes. Some of the early model 99 frames, which would have a build date of late 1974, even had the down pipe mount on them. The motors also are more similar than different with the 99 having 94/95/97 gears in it, among other things.
I have a stripped down model 99 I have been using in AHRMA cross country since 2009. If anybody wanted to build a 100cc bike for AHRMA, the road toad is a good choice. Like Bob Whitman mentioned, the Resonator has some good articles on this.
Hey Bob in MD! Hope to catch up with you this year! I am going to try to make a couple events out East. If not there, the Ohio rounds for sure.

Re: Hodaka 100
Ah good catch Mark and you are right, the model 98 is the same as WAS 74... What was I thinking!!?! So all good then!
I heard this was addressed I just don't see the exception in the rule book. At the end of the day the difference is mostly rider any way. My brother beats a guy on his 96 that is racing a HOPPED UP 01 so who cares... LoL
So we all agree.... 99,01, or 02 the best choice to start with.... You can even then put the 03 swing arm on that frame to get some factory style extended wheel base
Bob in MD
PS:
Mark, I am going to be a White Lightning next week. I may do some stuff in Ohio. I am racing my PE250B in Cross Country now... Sorry Hodaka bro's there was just no way to make my Thunderdog competitive in Post Vintage Historic Open!!!! I still race the Wombat'n'stein in MX Mark. Come out to Sky Ranch in West VA!!!!!!! It is a BLAST and two days of racing!
