Super Combat Oil Leak

Post by sunnyd1960 »

My Super Combat has oil leak at the kick starter shaft.
I have not removed the clutch cover to investigate. Looked at parts diagram and see o ring seal. Cant tell if this seal is outside of the case or not. In any event, anyone dealt with this yet? Advice?
Thanks

The o-ring that seals the kick shaft is not in the side cover. It is the engine case. The kick shaft has to be removed from the shaft passage before you can see and remove the o-ring. This requires a transmission tear down. So I would say you are looking at a complete rebuild just to do the o-ring. Or, to put it another way, since you need to split the cases to repair your leak, you might as well schedule new bearings and seals at the same time. Then there are new clutch discs, rebuild the top end, etc. Do it once, do it right. Or if it was recently rebuilt and somehow the kick shaft seal was overlooked, you are going to have to completely take it apart again at the least, so new gaskets anyway. For the cost of crankshaft seals, I would replace them no matter their age. And if it isn't something you have checked lately or thought about much, check your lower end bearing on the rod. Side play should be within specs, and you should not be able to detect up and down clearance at all. If there is radial play in the rod bearing, now is the time to rebuild the crank.

Thanks Hydraulic Jack...
Next question...
Know anyone reputable in the St Petersburg FL area capable of this large task?
If not St Pete, where?
Thanks

I used to live in St. Pete, but I moved to the wide open areas of northern Pasco County (near Land-o-lakes). I have rebuilt many a Hodaka engine. Once you have done it (or assisted) it is pretty easy. Send me a email and we can see what we can work out. Here is my email address: [email protected]
