Ace 100 gearbox oil
Ace 100 gearbox oil
What's the consensus on a good modern gearbox oil for an Ace 100?
Re: Ace 100 gearbox oil
Strait bacon grease. For a lean machine, use olive oil

And I just had breakfast and was saving up my sausage grease.
Hi megawatt,
I prefer BelRay Gear Saver in all my Hodakas. There are a lot of current gear oils that are sold at your local cycle shop that are way better than the ones that were used back in the 1960s and 1970s. Everyone seems to have their favorite.

Re: Ace 100 gearbox oil
I have been using Wolfshead synthetic automatic tranmission fluid in all my Hodakas. It has made the clutch much more gentle. Not grabby as with 30wt motor oil. Especally when cold. No problems after a year. Of course i don't race them hard. Just trials an trails.

Re: Ace 100 gearbox oil
Capacity is listed as 1 1/4 pint but it can be very difficult to get all of the old fluid out of the cases, so on a refill start with a pint and check the dip.
Here is the link to the spec sheet for the Ace 100:

Brand and weight is personal preference, like beer and other things. Just know that gear oil viscosity doesn't equal motor oil viscosity. 75W gear oil is pretty close to 30W motor oil in viscosity. High quality synthetic ATF will also work fine, and is far lighter in viscosity. Depends on where and how you ride. I used ATF when racing in the 70's but don't use it now because there are so many very good gear oils out there intended for wet clutch bikes, although I must note that automatic transmissions also use wet clutches that are indistinguishable in form and function from a wet clutch in a bike, so ATF isn't a crazy notion at all. Personal preference. There is no one perfect answer.

Re: Ace 100 gearbox oil
After rebuilding my engine/trans I opted for Yamalube Trans-Oil Plus "For use in two-stroke motorcycle gear box transmissions". It says on the back that it's for wet clutch gear box transmissions and says the viscosity is 20W-40API. I noticed that it is hard to wipe off the remaining oil from the glass measuring cup afterwards which seems like it has a good lubricating quality.
Re: Ace 100 gearbox oil
Oils are akin to a Holy Water. Use a quality 2-stroke gear oil for wet clutches and you should be fine.

1.25 pints. Mineral oil or ATF should be good. You can't go wrong with Valvoline 30 wt non-detergent if you want to go old school.
