What's It Like Where You Are?

Post by viclioce »

Weather wise that is! Here in Santa Fe we are experiencing nights in the mid teens to low 20's. During the day it can warm up to the upper 40's and sometimes not even that. We have gotten Tony bits of snow in town so far, but we've had 22" in the mountains so far!

So what's it like where you live now? Warm? Cold? Snowy? Rainy? Hot & dry? ; D Victor

Weathers been really bad here in Florida. The last couple of nights the temp's went down into the low 50's and it only warmed up during the day to the mid 70's. I even had to break out a sweatshirt the other day

I live in the land of lake effect snow. Getting some now, and it's cold, low 20s. I drove thru the storm that covered Cleveland OH to Erie Pa the other night, not fun, but doable. Winter in upstate NY, it's always changing.

Yeah, I know all about what that bad Florida weather is like! I have a friend who just moved from there to Colorado Springs! He's put 140,000 miles on his current bike and this is the first time he will have to put it away for winter! He & his son just Road from Fla. to Co. just a couple of weeks ago! Right after the hurricane!

Clarence. We don't have lake affect here. We just have Rocky Mtn. Snowstorms. Sometimes we get lucky, sometimes not so lucky! ; D Victor

Hey Victor, 10's-20's and heavy snow next three days here in northeast Iowa. So far this system has left 3". By next week we'll be seeing single digits below to single digits above zero. As craptastic as that sounds, here it means one thing and one thing only...ICE RIDING!!!!!!!!!

Victor, we have a 40 acre lake on our riding land. We clear snow to make a race course so its really ice - not snow - riding. Its like riding on the best dirt ever with the additional advantage in that when you fall, which you will, the bike never hooks up and you just slide to a stop. Full protective gear under a Carhartt quilt-lined coveralls and you're bulletproof. Its a hoot and all you need are a pair of old knobbies, some rubber cement, and a box of sheet metal screws.

Glad to hear some of you are making the most of winter. Here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, we have had a two week cold snap, temps down to 10 below Fahrenheit for you Yanks, minus 25 C for the rest of the world. Not much snow except in the mountains where skiing is in full swing. We just returned from the ski town of Fernie, BC today, it snows relentlessly there, and had to clear 12 inches off the car in order to move this morning. I kind of hate it myself, but my son and his wife checked off of work and raced up to the hill to be the first up the lifts. It's a bit cool in the garage here at home, so work on my most recent acquisition is kind of slow. It's not a Hodie, it's an 86 KTM 250 two stroke, and runs really swell. It will fit in the stable as my strictly off road mountain machine, as it is powerful, light and can be sacrificed if shit happens. If anyone has any stories to tell about these old KTM mixers, maybe send me a pm, as we don't want to hijack Victor's thread!

What's it like here? Well, after shoveling the walk and driveway and the Church's walks THREE times in TWO days, I'll tell you what its like. Its like should I have a Porter and Nachos? Or Yukon Jack coffee with Christmas cookies? Decisions. Decisions. ;-)

It's about lunchtime and it's hovering around 37C (99F). Should I jump in the pool and then have a beer or have a beer and then jump in the pool? Like you say Ed....decisions, decisions. I could do some work on the next issue of VMX Magazine but that can wait until it cools down.

Here in northern Ontario Canada it is winter for sure. After a record breaking summer of heat the Great Lakes water temps are warmer than usual. This means we will see much more "lake effect" snow this winter. (cold air from the west blowing over warm water equals snow). So far our coldest days were Friday and Saturday past, minus 17 C (pretty close to 0F). We got about a foot of snow on Thursday and about 7" yesterday and overnight. Another foot expected between two storms due later this week. Last year in December the ground was bare. Guys rode their bikes on Xmas day. But that is unusual and we paid the price for the rest of that winter. Still had snow on the ground in May.
My tiny shop is sistered to the house and not too hard to heat so my B+ project is in progress. Trying to take it easy as I don't want to be finished too quickly. Then I'd be tempted to find another bike.

have fun everyone!

Ken

Ken (the one in Canada) - we are supposed to be headed for about 0F in the next day or so. Brrrr.

Ken (the one in Oz) - here's an idea. Rather than making such a tough decision, run a study. Try the pool/beer thing both ways, and analyze which way is better. Hmmm, this may require several iterations of the experiment I suppose.

That sounds pretty taxing Ed, I'm just going to opt for the beer and think about it a bit more.

Don't over tax yourself. Keep drinking a beer until you FEEL LIKE getting into the pool! I used to have a hot tub. Cut it up into 4 pieces this summer. I knew I was going to miss it this winter. ; ( Victor

Alabama weather. First cold snap of the year. Lows in the 20-30-40's. Highs in the 40-50-60's. Good time to "chill" in the shop. Or watch movies. Or whatever. :)

-4 F now with a foot of new snow. Not a very Hodakable day here in Montana. Picked up two project bikes last week, but they will have to wait.

Last week it got down below zero in SE Kansas and yesterday worked up a real sweat raking leaves on Christmas day at 67 degrees! Just a report from Max's area. Not complaining! :D

Good for you Max! This morning it's a balmy 25* in Santa Fe! And that's at 10:50 am! I will take the 65 mile drive down to my mom's this afternoon to Albuquerque where it should hit a high of 45*. It's a lower elevation there & they get higher temps. Spending the night there and then driving her in her car to Phoenix in the morning where she will stay until after Easter or some time in April and then she will come back. Hopefully someone else in the family will drive her back. Hoping when I get back on Thursday that there will be enough warm weather to work in the garage! Happy New Year to All!!! ; D Victor

I have a stock tank heater in my pond to keep the fish alive thru the Winter months. But it's been so cold that ice has formed over the top of the pond & there is a frozen, but running water stream from the spout back to the frozen top of the pond! Water is still running through it, and it looks quite unusual to be still flowing! ; D Victor
