Fuse replacement for 1972 Wombat 125

Post by Brian4236 »

I hope everyone had an enjoyable 4th.
I need to replace the fuse for my 1972 Wombat 125.
According to the schematic, the fuse is part #949420 (this is the fuse that fits in the clear plastic fuse box assembly, part #949419).
The fuse is identified as #949420. Strictly Hodaka sells a fuse ID'd as #949420(20A). Does that "20A" mean 20 amps? The reason I ask is because the fuse that burned out on my bike is "KSG 5A." Is that the correct fuse?
Thanks for your help.

Yes, 20a stands for 20 amp. 5a is a 5 amp. If the parts book lists 20a, that's what should be in there.

Any reason why someone would use a 5A? This was a bike that was restored. It looks to be the original fuse to me (there was another one just like it in the fuse box assembly).

If you check the schematic it states 15A for model 94 and 20A for model 94A.

Maybe someone added an Ace fuse to it? My B+ had a 5 amp fuse. Or was that one wrong too? ; D Victor

Many headlights have been burnt out with too many amps a smaller fuse would or could save a headlight. If the headlights taillight and horn will work with a 5 amp fuse good deal if it burns out the fuses then put in a bigger fuse??---------Clarence

The current draw or amperage of any circuit or circuit component is determined by the resistance (and/or voltage). With an un-regulated alternator on the Hodie, the voltage rises with RPM, importantly so does the wattage (volts x amps) and that power increase burns bulbs out.

Just to nit-pick...

Most Hodakas put out total 45 watts from the magneto at 8 volts. W=VA. W/V=A.

45 / 8 = 5.625

So even if everything on the bike is drawing simultaneously, you should not need much more than a basic 5A fuse. 20 is way too much. It would be almost like having no fuse at all.

The headlight itself is rated at 35 W for either high or low beam. 35 / 8 = 4.375. Hence, 5 amps headlight fuse.

Simple stuff. Don't know what the schematic reference number is for, but it isn't amperage.

Thanks, Victor. Makes sense. As I said, the fuses in the plastic holder look to be original, or at least old.

You can get the old style glass buss fuse holder or do like I did & replace it with a mini blade holder. I figured carrying spare mini blades was safer than carrying glass fuses. The mini blades won't break easily. ; D Victor
