Hey Gang, being a photographer, I thought it would be good to add a visual part to our discussion. Checking my collection of parts it didn't take long to find a good example of wear on gear teeth. With an ideal lubricant these surfaces should never touch but as we see, erosion has taken place. Not only is wear happening but heat is also a factor as friction is also present in wear.

Notice on the non-drive side of the gear teeth there is no wear. All of this is confirming our theory that our lubricants should be the best available and be changed regularly.

Max

PS--I find the wear patterns strange. One would think the wear surfaces would be flat, not pitted. Just an observation.

That pitting reminds me of flat-tappet (lifter)/camshaft wear in old-design engines run without the ZDDP additive in the engine oil. "ZDDP" is a zinc-phosphate additive that has been removed from most current oils. Google for more info.

Isn't that the additive that is still found in Diesel engine lubricating oil?

Hi Clarence, yes we are using Amsoil Dominator @ 32:1 with 93 Octane pump gas. We have had great results with Mobil 1. Again ZERO failures. Thanks for asking---Terry

I don't know about adding another fresh organic oil smell to the two-stroke mystique - isn't bean oil enough for you? :-)

The ZDDP is in diesel oil as well as motorcycle-specific motor oils (4-stroke). It was removed from/reduced in "usual" motor oils because it poisons cat converters. I think Lucas makes a ZDDP additive that can be added.

I love the smell of Castor in the morning, better than Napalm

Kelly! That's the oil I use! I add red chile flakes to the oil at least 2 weeks prior to putting it in the bike. The chile makes the heat disapate faster! LOL!!!

And my clutch plates don't wear or slip but they did pick up a wierd Italian accent! ; D Victor
