Chrome tanks

Post by squid on a 300 »

The combat wombat is almost a rolling chasis now..I de rusted the tank and it sprung about 2 dozen leaks. I'm on the hunt for another. I have a lead on a wombat tank. I know they are different part numbers but how much of a difference is there between the combat wombat/dirt squirt chrome tanks and the wombat tank?

Quite a bit of difference. The C/W tank has slim lines and is way cool. The Wombat tank would not only not look right on your C/W, it would interfere with knees when riding on a track. Just my opinion...

I would also vote for the stock tank. It is a two gallon tank as compared with a two and 3/4 gallon tank. The two gallon tank may be a little harder to find. Thinking the chrome tank dirt squirt also used the two gallon tank.

You might at least consider sealing your old tank if it looks good externally. My 94A tank looked good but the tunnel had the same problem. I ordered a tank sealer from Caswell that worked as advertised. After de-rusting with sheet rock screws internally I sanded the exterior of the tunnel. I mixed a small portion of the two part mix and applied it to the exterior of the tunnel followed with a layer of fine weave fiberglass cloth and another coat of sealer. Looking in the filler you could see where the sealer had mushroomed through the pin holes. The next day I completed sealing the tank internally. I'm totally satisfied with the results.

My opinion of course.

The original I think is shot..the leaks are not in the tunnel..they are all over the top of the tank and around the filler. Even if I did seal it I dont think it could be stripped and rechromed as its probably too thin on top

Hey Bob, changing the subject a little, but what tire is that on your Wombat? I'm trying to find something that will fit my Super Rat 98. Linc

The tires are Vee's relatively new vintage style VRM109

Got an 18X3.50 on the rear (and it clears the chain guard) and a 21X3.00 for the front that's not mounted yet..Just orderd the spokes from Paul so I can get the front wheel together and have a roller.

Found these tanks on Ebay but I'm having a hard time telling if they are C/W Dirt Squirt tanks or a Wombat tanks. To me they look a little wide in the back to be a CW/DS tank?..any opinions of those of you who have more experience with Hodakas would be much appreciated.

thanks
bob

These are both the larger tanks. Wombat tanks based are the large filler holes.

The CW and Squirt tanks also have large filler holes.

I should have stated that these are Wombat tanks as opposed to Ace tanks due to the larger filler holes. Both are the larger style tank. Another thing to note is the fact that neither Ebay post correctly identifies the item for sale. That's weird...

I understand the big differences between them. Like you said the sellers on ebay dont. Small fillers are listed as wombat tanks and large fillers as rat tanks..to most I guess a chrome hodaka tank is a hodaka tank...Was having some difficulty identifying them from the angles the pics were taken at and appreciate everyone's help.
The quest continues...ill try to be patient..a good one or at least a restorable one will eventually show up somewhere. After all isnt the hunt the exciting part !

Bob. I don't know if this is a match or not. But I found it on eBay this morning. Looks to be a new replica tank. Either that or a NOS someone had stashed somewhere. Anyway, to me it looks like it is probably aWom at reproduction, and it's pricy, especially when you add in the shipping, But on the chance it is what they claim, I am forwarding it on to you. Here's the link.

The problem with this is it's quite expensive, doesn't include the tank badges (add $50) and there are no petcock(s) shown, and no tank mounting hardware. Add it all up and the tank can cost you more than buying a second bike, possibly with a reasonable tank.

Are you able to have the tank sealed on the inside? If not, even welding and grinding the repairs and having the tank rechromed may be less costly in the long run, or finding a tank which doesn't need repair and rechroming that. But they sure look like they are going to be few and far between. ; D Victor
