How to spoke a road toad?

Post by hodakaguy »

I have been looking for some instructions on how to lace up a road toad wheel. The conical hub is different than the standard hub models. Anyone know of any resource?

If not, I will have to find a pic of the wheel and futz around.
Thanks to anyone in advance.

Ok, first off you have 4 different types of spokes, short and long, inside and out. And theoretically the rim is drilled for that pattern. Separate the spokes into groups. You install the inside ones first. Then the outsides. Hopefully you have a pattern as to which way the spokes go in relation to the hub. Lace it up and true it.

I'll look it up in my manual for you and shoot a copy of the page(s) and post. Give me about an hour to get home! ; D Victor

Crap! My Road Toad manual isn't a full manual! It's a manual update and a parts list. : (
Guess I'll need to buy one!

It lists the spokes as all one size and being #9 spokes. Hope that helps. ; D Victor

Greg tells me spoking a conical hub is the same pattern as spoking a traditional hub. There's instructions inside my Wombat manual. If you would like I can shoot you a copy of those instructions this evening. ; D Victor

While the lacing pattern may be the same - there are four different lengths/bends of spokes for the conical hub . . . which sounds complicated but really isn't. A bit of careful observation will reveal whether a spoke is an "inside" or an "outside" and which side of the hub it fits ("brake side" or "other side").

Hi guys
Why don't you look on Ebay for a good used replacement, better than restring new spokes

Before I work on a wheel, I place the wheel (brake side down) on a flat surface. I then measure the distance from the flat surface to the edge of the rim and record that. Next I measure the distance from the brake drum to the out diameter of the rim and record that. When lacing up the wheel, you can refer to these measurements as you adjust the spokes and your rim will be in the original position. The final adjustment will be on the truing stand..

I've respoked quite a few wheels over the last forty plus years. Nothing Hodaka makes is that tricky. I had an old husky wheel that had me stumped for a bit, but other than that, your a Road Toad wheel shouldn't scare you off. If you get a new set of spokes, separate and identify the four different groups. Inners have to go in first. Each different group of spoke will repeat itself every fourth hole, both in the hub, and in the rim. The holes in the rim are drilled at an angle, and if you look close, you'll see the angle points in a specific direction, which will tell you what side it matches up to, and which direction, front or back. If you take a few pics before you start, or have another wheel to look at, it will help you if you get confused. A little trick that works sometimes is to look at the hub closely, you'll more than likely see wear marks from the spokes. This will tell you which direction and whether a particular hole is an inner or outer. Once you get started and get your pattern figured out, just attach spoke nipples by a couple of turns. Don't force any spokes, if it feels like you have to bend one to force the nipple on, your pattern is off. Once you get it all spoked up loose, then go around and tighten up each nipple a couple of turns at a time. Give the rim a shake now and then to make sure the nipples are seated in the rim holes. When you get all the nipples where the slop is gone, time to mount it in a truing stand and true it up. Can't explain that here right now, but just have patience, take your time, and use a proper fitting spoke wrench, no crescent wrenches. Good luck.

I purchased a Model 99 Road Toad manual on eBay yesterday. Did you get your wheel spoked? If not, when it arrives in a couple of days, I can scan the pages for wheel spoking for you, assuming it's shown in there! ; D Victor

Edit. Well it turns out it was listed as a shop manual but in actuality it was just an owner's manual. Oh well...... ; ( Vctor
