Re: counter shaft spacer location
Thank you for the quick reply Bullfrog! I'll try flipping the collar end-for-end and also tightening the sprocket nut. I believe I read somewhere else here that it should be 250 inch pounds....does that sound about right?

counter shaft spacer location
Hello! Just a quick question...for the Model 99 Road Toad....in figure "C" of the schematics, does anyone know if part # 914608R (counter shaft spacer - left) is located on top of (outside of) the counter shaft oil seal or under (behind) it? When I removed my sprocket tonight to try to dia...

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Thank you again Matt Glascock and Hydraulic Jack for the info. I'll play around with the test meter and see what I can find!

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Thanks once again Hydraulic Jack for a very informative response! At this point, all I'd love to be able to do is somehow "test" my voltage regulator and I just can't seem to be able to find any solid information on how to do that. If the 8.2 to 8.4 volt output that I measure at the batter...

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Thank you Hydraulic Jack! I hear ya' in terms of what Hodaka put in their specs for the lighting coil output. The exact text in my owner's manual reads, "Over 6 volts at 2500 RPM (with 45 watt circuit load) - Under 9 volts at 8000 RPM". I guess my biggest concern is that I'm going to fry t...

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Thanks Matt. I already have the Road Toad owner's manual. While there is much information to be had in it, alas...there is no mention of proper charging system output or how to test the regulator. At this point I'm just going to order a new/used regulator and hope that it limits the voltage going to...

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Well, I installed my new MotoBatt MBT6N4 sealed battery tonight. The lighting is all working fine when the bike is running. BUT...when I measure voltage while the bike is running (at the terminals) I'm getting between 8.2 and 8.4 volts (depending on RPM). Is this OK or is this too much? I bought the...

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Hydraulic Jack....you were right on the money. My supposedly "fully charged" battery was 5.29 volts this morning after being left off the charger overnight. Thanks again for your help!

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Thank you VERY much for that excellent information Jack! I'm hoping that my new battery will solve my issue and that I won't have to do any further disassembly/diagnosing. I'll do the charging voltage test on the fully charged new battery once I get it and install it. As for the old battery, I'll le...

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
I just ordered a new maintenance free battery a few minutes ago. I went with this one: https://www.amazon.com/MotoBatt-MBT6N4-Activated-Maintenance-QuadFlex/dp/B00ABVOOP0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499021112&sr=8-1&keywords=MotoBatt+MBT6N4 I looked at my current lead acid battery and it app...

Re: Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Thanks Matt! I didn't even know that such a workshop manual existed. I'm assuming you're referring to the one available from Strictly Hodaka for about $46.00 (part 209004)? I'm going to start with checking that wiring tomorrow and I'll remove the battery and check that as well. Something tells me I'...

Road Toad lights suddenly dimming
Hey guys - While riding my model 99 Road Toad today, I noticed that the headlight output had become very dim, as well as all of the turn signals, brake lights and the dash indicator bulbs. The horn was barely audible. Everything was fine just a day ago. I checked the voltage at my Battery Tender pig...

Hodaka "Buddy Seat"???
OK, can anyone tell me if this was actually an authentic Hodaka-sold aftermarket accessory? I got quite a chuckle when I saw it this morning, as at 210 lbs...my recently restored model 99 Toad can barely lug MY bloated body around, much less that of a passenger! Granted...it seemed to move much quic...

Re: best way to "rough up" a glazed brake drum?
Sounds good thrownchain. I'll give the sandpaper method a shot. And yes...I'm probably a bit spoiled by the performance of today's brakes and I may in fact be hoping for a little more than what is possible with the Toad.

Re: best way to "rough up" a glazed brake drum?
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was actually wondering about the lathe option myself. Back in the day, people actually had drums cut (at least on their 4-wheeled vehicles) when they did a brake job. Today, new drums are so inexpensive that everyone just buys new ones. On a bike though, that's not...

best way to "rough up" a glazed brake drum?
Last year as I was completing my model 99 Road Toad restoration project, I noticed that the inside of the front brake drum was exceptionally shiny and almost as smooth as glass. The front pads are new, but I don't seem to get much stopping power from that front brake at all. I suppose I might be use...

Re: My poorly carbureted Road Toad
Hey Dale! I wanted to ask if you perhaps owned a "crystal ball"! After getting the carb tuning very close to where it needed to be, it apparently was still running a bit rich on the low and midrange levels. I decided to try moving the needle clip up yet another position (to groove number 2...

Re: Sealing Combat Wombat air box
I used screen spline (for holding a screen in place in a door) held in place with RTV silicone sealant. It comes in many diameters and is very flexible. It worked great for making a gasket for my model 99 Road Toad's air box cover.

Re: My poorly carbureted Road Toad
Thanks Dale! Yeah...I guess you're right. There really are so many things that go into the mix here. In any event, I'm glad it's running well now, as if I had to take that carb off one more time I'd have pulled the few remaining hairs out of my head! ;) Thanks to you and everyone else for the helpfu...

Re: My poorly carbureted Road Toad
Finally got everything sorted out this weekend! I ended up with the needle clip in the third (middle) groove of a 5EL9 needle, 160 main, 27.5 pilot and the air screw at 2 turns out. Smooth power delivery at all throttle openings and 1-kick starts are about all I could ask for. Amazing just how far o...
