Re: Dirt Squirt 80 Resto Project

Not sure about the others, but Can-Am no longer makes motorcycles. Bombardier was the original parent company and are a manufacturer of aircraft and transit products like rail and streetcars. Some time ago the spun off BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products) who sell snowmobiles, watercraft, and ATVs...

Love the picture. Simple, concise, and only one word. It even looks a bit like a wanted poster.

Oh, and happy birthday Ed.

Re: Dirt Squirt 80 Resto Project

Kent, as soon as I saw your post I remembered we have (Sasquatch Cycle) a Can-Am Qualifier with a Jake's Cycle dealer sticker on it. According to the sticker, they sold Hodaka, Can-Am, CZ, Jawa, and I think one other brand that escapes me. Anyway, every brand they sold went bust. It seems kind of fu...

Re: Dirt Squirt 80 Resto Project

Hodaka was fairly popular in Canada. Growing up I had a 96 Dirt Squirt and I had friends with a Combat Wombats and Road Toad. There was a dealer close to us. As Hodaka faded away in the 80's there were few of the later models sold and I guess that's why I don't see them very often. I've seen a Thund...

Glad the hear you're saving the little Squirt, and good luck with the project. I've always wanted one, but I've never even seen one up here in Canada.

Re: Problem disassembling 938750 fork

Are the forks springs installed? It's easier to remove the screw if the springs and fork cap are installed, as it puts a bit of pressure on the damper rod.

Re: hodaka ace 100 build (new to building hodakas)

The carb in the photo looks like the standard 20mm Mikuni used on the Ace 100. Every one I have seen is slotted on one side. I measured a couple of mine and they were all about 21.5 mm at the manifold end.

Hope that helps.

Apparently parts of the Red Green show were filmed at the Sportsman Club just down the road from where I grew up, and used to ride my Dirt Squirt.

That's about as close to fame as I'll ever get.

Re: 98 Super Rat almost all there - Stator advice

I can't speak for the Super Rat, but I am running a Honda ignition on my Combat Wombat reed valve engine. The entire ignition (stator, rotor, coil and CDI box) is from a CR125 (can't recall the year). The keyway in the flywheel does not line up with the keyway in the crank, but if you install it car...

Re: model 98 Super Rat

I made a race bike with the Toad engine. I raised the exhaust port and used a Super Rat head. I also ran a 28mm carb and HT3 pipe. The motor worked really well but I broke third gear twice. Paul's improved cushioned hub rubbers are supposed to alleviate the shock load on the transmission, but I have...

Re: turn signals

Given the same brightness, a 6V bulb will draw twice the current of a 12V bulb. With the higher current, I suspect that a 12V flasher will cause the hyper flashing.

I am not sure how common 6V electronic flashers and LED lights are, but they may be available (I'm too lazy to search).

Re: turn signals

The flasher is likely a bimetallic type. Current from the signal bulbs flows through the flasher bimetallic element causing it to heat up and bend, thus opening the circuit. When it cools, it goes back to its original shape thus closing the circuit. This is what causes the lights to flash. LEDs have...

Re: turn signals

You will probably find that the LED signals will not flash when installed on a Hodaka. This is because the old Hodaka flasher is not designed to work with LEDs. You will need to purchase a LED flasher, but I am not sure if they are available for 6 volt systems.

Re: Engine haves torque ?

For the model 94:

The clutch nut and primary gear nut are 250 in pounds.

The flywheel nut is 170 in pounds.

I use a 1/4 in ratchet with a hardened steel bit to tighten the case screws. No torque is specified.

Re: Road Toad shock interchangeability

I'm pretty sure the Combat Wombat shocks are rebuildable, so if the seals have failed they can be fixed. The problem is that they were not that good to begin with, so for a rider an after market shock is a better bet. For a 10 point Super Combat restoration you will want the original shocks, but of ...

There are people who specialize in plastic welding. I have a friend who has an 80's YZ125 that uses a "one model year only" plastic tank. He has had it plastic welded several times to repair cracks. The system uses heat to melt the plastic, and plastic filler rod to build up the repaired a...

Now I want to see you figure out how much carbon is generated per ounce of premix oil. Or... Maybe you can prove that Hodakas are environmentally friendly because all the emissions end up being stored in the pipe. :geek:

Interesting kluge. I have seen all kinds of badly conceived fixes over the years, many are likely due to a lack of spare parts as dealers closed up when Hodaka went bust. Here is the air filter in the first Hodaka I bought:
