Super Rat 93

I have a question. Maybe it is me, but, how come I see so many 93 SuperRat engines that have the helical cut primary \ clutch gear sets?
The Ser No clearly is a "M" number?
Just curious as the Hodaka workshop manual does list the helical gears and not the straight cut gears for the rat.

All Super Rat's ( 93,93A,93B and 98) used straightcut gears from the factory.

Somewhere, I picked up the minutia that the straight cut gears bought the Super Rat an extra 1/2 horsepower. As Ed reminded me in another recent post, horse power gains come in myriad small improvements, and so the straight cut gears appear to be a good example of this, if true. For this reason, I've kept an extra set of straight cut gear sets for that day when I finally get to that P motor conversion. I THINK everything else in the P and M bottom ends is the same: ignition, transmission, crank, bearings and seals--with the clutch housing a possible exception? It's all in the books...

The countershaft sits in a needle bearing, not a brass bushing like an Ace bottom. So the boss is bigger on a Rat, making the cases different.
Not sure if there was a gearing difference in the trans - seems like there would be.

The Ace 100's and early Super Rats (93 series) all shared the same five individual gears on the countershaft. The primary gears and mating clutch pinion gears were different between the Ace 100 and Rats. There were two different primary gear/clutch pinion gear combinations for the Super Rats.

Yep the 1972 Rat had a higher gear Ratio than the earlier and then used a larger rear sprocket and geared it back down , I made no sense , I had asked HARRY why this was so and he had no idea either since the final drive worked out the same . I guess all they accomplished was addind exta weight with the bigger sprocket. Besides using the odd ball size of a 423 chain

Ah yes--needle bearings, not bushings for the Rat, and a different right-side case. Forgot about that. And two different primary/pinion gear combinations? Well, whaddaya know. Once again, "the collective" provides. Oh no--does this mean "it takes a village" to build a Hodaka correctly? Kumbaya.
