More shifting problems

Post by DGardner »

Okay I got my shifter adjusted correct now ( shift to third and rock the rear wheel and the shift shaft stays in place) First I rebuilt the cover, new bushings and all the moving parts are new. The problem is when I shift too 5th gear it will not down shift, I have taken the cover off and then shift it too 5th and still it will not down shift. I have to pull the shift arm back with my finger just a bit then it will down shift just fine. What am I missing here? DG

DG, this might be a dumb question, but you DO have the inner shift cover in place? (The thin cover that goes on the inside of the shift cover, protecting the shift mechanism and flywheel from dust and mud).
I think if that cover is not in place (or perhaps not properly flush against the cover), the arm is allowed to rock too far toward the engine, which will make downshifting from 5th difficult or impossible.
If that all checks out, then back to thinking it may be an out of whack control shaft or bad inner springs.

DG, Did you ever test your bike with the NOS shift cover? If both covers do the same thing, then you have an issue with the springs most likely. If the NOS cover is okay, then you should be able to isolate the issue within your shift cover.

Laurie...Yes when I had the shift cover on the bike I had the inner cover in place. Even with the cover off the bike and bench shifting it, it would get stuck in 5th gear. So I got looking at the cover and noticed that the hole for the shift shaft had been bored off center for the new bushing's, So I put all the new parts in the new cover and now it shifts like a dream. Who is good at rebuilding shift covers? I'm thinking about getting some covers rebuilt just to have as spares. Thanks again for all the help. DG

DG, I can personally recommend Ronald Liddle in the Spokane area. His contact information can be found in the Technical Tips section on the Strictly Hodaka web site. I know that there are others that do great work also...

Hey Doug,
Hodaka shift covers are getting hard to find and I could use at least one and maybe two. I would be willing to trade labor for rebuildable shift cover. Let me know if interested.
