racing numbers

hey back in the day what was some of the ways numbers were put on number plates like on a combat wombat , super rat . just some black electricians tape , paint brush . crayon . .........

While I don't seem to have pictures of the early years of flat track racing, I always hand painted mine. Here are a few from the 70's.

At first we used black electrical tape, but it didn't turn out too well. Later, we just bought ready made numbers from the motorcycle shops. It always helped if you had a number assigned to you. We would also bring along a few paper plates, clear tape and a black marker. Then, if someone needed to change numbers, just make up the new one on the paper plate and tape it onto your number plate. We would also buy contact paper and cut our own numbers from that. That way you could change the style and color of your numbers.
