Hello again, 92 -> 95 gears?

Post by oochaDog »

Hello all -

Whelp, I threw a chain and broken 3rd counter gear and 3rd on my main shaft on my 95. Please don't ask how I did it because I don't want to relive my stupidity. This is a safe place, right?? :oops:

Anyhoo, I had a thought and grabbed a main shaft and counter gears from storage. I figure they are off a 92 (one gear has 92 stamped on it). They look to be pristine and so close in measurements (see pic), it makes me think I can use the 92 counter gears and main shaft in my 95. I did a test dry fit and everything seems OK.

Is it an OK idea/possible to do the swap, or should I spend the big bucks and purchase a new main shaft and 3rd counter gear? Also, since I may be purchasing new gearing, any secret squirrel gears I should look into? I only vintage race this 95.

Thanks for everything.
Jay

For the short answer: Yes. You can put a full set (main shaft, counter shaft gears and kicker gear) of Ace 100 gears in your Combat Wombat.
Now, a little longer answer. Pretty much any of the COMPLETE gear sets from the Ace 100 (model 92 - 92B+), original Super Rat (model 93 - 93B), the original Dirt Squirt (model 96), the Super Combat (model 97) and later Super Rat (model 98) can be used in those engines. Can't use them in the Ace 90 engine (without modifications to the cases) as those were 4 speed engines. The gear sets can't be swapped into, or with, anything after the model 98 Super Rat (starting with the 99 Road Toad, etc.) as those bikes had a different transmission set-up being primary kick (kick in gear) and having oil pump drives in them.
As for your model 95 transmission, it is the same (gearing wise) as the model 96 Dirt Squirt and the model 94 & 94A Wombats (other than that the 95 had a 20 tooth 5th gear and the 94 had a 19 tooth 5th gear). So, you have a wide range of options. Just remember it needs to be a complete set; main shaft, counter shaft gears and kicker gear. As far as the kicker gear, you might have to use the entire kick shaft, roller retainer and rollers, as the Ace 100 used a smaller size in those parts compared to the 95. I had done the same swaps, I just don't remember what I used for the kick assembly.

Thank you so much for the info! I totally forgot about the kicker gear, I need to make sure I have that.
