Victor get a hold of Roger Karen in Utah he has done a great deal of work on making lite adapt to Hodaka,s he is a club member so should be easy, Bruce

The 15 watt standard headlight works fine and lasts forever as it never gets hot. It's great in the daytime. It's only at night there's a problem. Even then it's pretty good up to maybe twenty miles an hour if you aim it a bit low.

The headlight is unrectified AC. There is an AC/DC switch on the underside of the headlight bucket to connect it to the DC taillight side for roadside illumination in case the motor quits. The whole system is based upon balancing the load and the [meager] generation capacity to achieve voltage regulation. Unexpected things could occur if you start subbing in differing wattage draws such as overcharging the battery or frying other bulbs. IOW, it is necessary to fully understand the system before modifying anything.

The problem is to find a sealed beam with an led. Non existent. Gutting the bulb from a stock one and mounting an led inside is the project.

I did that, but it has some draw backs. An incandescent bulb has the filaments spaced so that they are in the location of the focal point of the parabolic reflector. They are a point source of light. They radiate light all around, in all directions. LEDs don't.
I found some LED 'bulbs' that fit a headlight bulb socket, and were touted to be two beam, and put them into a stock Hodaka headlight that I had cut the bulb out of. The results were not what we assume a headlight would act like.
There was a lot more light from the headlight, but it was not focused like a normal bulb. I suppose if you were into night trail riding, it would be ideal.
When the "high beam" was activated, it just increased the total lumen output, and didn't raise or lower the wide angle beam of light.

If someone wants to play with it, I can find out what the LED numbers are, and you can see if it is something that might work for you. JR

I haven't personally had any experience with them, but there are lighting 'solutions' -as they call things these days - for mountain bikes and Ebikes that have some pretty amazing output and are designed to be, well, headlights. I have no idea of the supply voltages and such involved, but it might be worth a look.

The bicycle industry is in a shambles in its supply chain, so just because something exists in theory doesn't mean you can actually buy one any time soon. I have a friend in the industry who has had a bike on order for so long it will be different model, design and year whenever it arrives. The supply chain has serious problems supplying....chains, for example. Somebody forgot to factor in the electric bicycle boom. Brilliant.

Thanks for the info....I'm in the early stages of dragging my B+ out of the shed for service. It's 30 year service, that is!
