voltage regulator
What is the best way to function test the six-volt voltage regulator? I have a 12 volt charger (or battery if that would work better) and a VOM. Thanks fellas.
Re: voltage regulator
Oscilloscope and an AC voltage generator for a bench test. Just the Oscilloscope if testing on a running motor.
If you have a really good "analog" VOM, reading AC, you can get a pretty good idea that it is working. Digital, not so much.

Re: voltage regulator
Some years back I did some voltage checking on my 125 with direct wired lighting. I found that I could install a 12volt 100watt incandescent aircraft landing light (which I think would cause Ponderosa Pine bark to smolder at twenty paces). Since, I was still experiencing head light failure (vibration or over-voltage?), I checked voltage at the headlight with my digital VOM (AC setting) and got readings in excess of 20 volts at mid to high engine revs. Then I installed an after-market solid-state 12V voltage regulator and re-checked. Readings never exceeded 12-13 volts at any engine speed. So it seemed to me that the digital volt meter gave me useful information. NOTE: The high wattage head light is still wayeeeee bright, but lasts wayeeeee longer now.

Hmm...thanks guys. This is an 01 DS. I'll try to take a couple pictures of the set up as is and get some voltage testing done at the head and tail light legs. As it sits, it blows 12V lamps like my old flip flash camera blew...well...flip flashes.
Re: voltage regulator
Matt. I have an extra voltage regulator if you decide you need one! Just let me know! Victor

Hmmm, I re-read the original post. Best way to perform function test? Install on bike, start engine, test voltage at head light connections.

22V at midrevs Captain. Part of the challenge is sorting out the homegrown DIY lighting set-up on this 01 DS. I have the instructions for a DS lighting kit to try to work from too. I will get some pictures of the set-up and try to sort it out - after I find a way to optimize my acid suppression regimen and lay in a stock of Night Train. On second thought, hold the acid suppression. And thank you, Victor. I may take you up on that offer!
Re: voltage regulator
Sounds like the one you have isn’t working! Just message me your address! Victor

I'm not giving up in it yet, Victor. I have a bit of sorting to do. I'll let you know. Thank you.
