Spline sizes?

How do you measure a splined shaft?

For instance, when I put a digital caliper on a Hodaka shift assembly spline, I get just a little over 12mm? But that's measuring the "outside" diameter of the splines. Is that correct? Or do you measure the "inside" diameter (low points) of the splines?

I notice for instance, that common shift shaft sizes are 6mm, 10mm and 11mm. Not seeing any 12mm, so I'm wondering if the Hodaka's just used an odd size or if I'm not measuring right.

Are you referring to the shaft the shift lever attaches too? If so, that is a 12mm shaft (at least the portion with splines).

Yes that was what I was referring to as an example.

I was just suspicious since 12mm seems to be unique to Hodaka.
