I have 2 Ace engines.
One starts P226xx
and P405xx.
is there any way of knowing what model year bikes these engines are from?

The smaller the number the earlier the year, I would say 3 digit number would be ‘64.

Go to hodaka-parts.com and you can look it up yourself.

I did but could not find what would tell me the year

P226xx model 92
P405xx model 92B I'm guessing

I was curious as to what year those engine #s may have been if there is a way of knowing

You are remembering that Hodaka didn't do "model years", right? They did "models".

Still, if you refer to the Hodaka book by Ken Smith - you might be able to figure that out. Sorry, but my book and I are in separate places.

Hodaka ace 90 engines were four digit's so my ace 90 engine #39 is P0039. Are you sure you have a hodaka engine? What are you referring to with the xx? The ace100 started with P20001, the 92A started with engine #P40001, and the 92B started with engine number P49101 in 1971?? ----------- Clarence

You have to look at the change logs to extrapolate the manufacture year. Every time Hodaka made a change in manufacturing, they logged the beginning engine and frame numbers that that change applied. You can find these change logs in the front of most workshop manuals.

Note: As Ed said, it is incorrect to say "1967 Ace 90". It is more correct to say "Ace 90 built in 1967".

Hello, I agree with Ed and Roger. There are no to my knowledge an exact list of eng. numbers versus month or year produced.
There are several Modification charts that give eng., and frame number as well as "some" month and year info, And the Ken Smith book lays out how many frames and etc where imported into the US. I started slow lets say 250 units a month then increase to over 500 bikes per month. There again one has to work backwards, from the frame or eng., number you have. Its not rocket science but will get you close. Also the web site Terry Larson has Hodaka-parts inc, has lots and lots of chart for your review. Good luck if you still cannot determine the info you have, please give me a call and I will again try to walk you thru a process, so at least you can make good guess. Its too bad the files that many have shown this info was thrown in the Dump when Hodaka USA closed its doors. Hodakapartsidaho.com 1--208--571--2823 One more thing, while frames where put together at the factory the frame had a number on it and then the worker went to a supply of matching size engines for the bikes, with not effort to thy and match the frame and numbers up, they just grabbed an engine and when on with it. Getting to wonderful bikes to us over here to have a good time on. Don,t take the fun Hodaka to serious.
