boat motor !!!!
boat motor !!!!
got a call from a guy that i asked to look out for hodaka parts as he gets around to most swap meets and far off places that most humans wouldn't dare to tread , and he said he was looking at a hodaka motor , looks like a 125 , has electronic ignition , do you want it , cheap , so looking at the future i figured yea i will take it so as not to discourage future finds. well good thing it was cheap. 98 ccs on the cylinder, no engine number, here's to investing in the future. theres so much going on in such small space its almost a piece of art needless to say its locked up tight .....albert

Re: boat motor !!!!
Did auto-correct get you on the subject line? Seems like "boat anchor" might have been more accurate????

yes ed " boat anchor "...not auto correct. loose nut on key board...

Looks like a 98 Super Rat. I would sure attempt to salvage parts if at all possible.

Even while putting together my previous comment, I was thinking almost exactly what Dale posted - late Rat, save what you can.
Keep the rubber side down!
Re: boat motor !!!!
it will be a lesson in de rusting for sure.
Re: boat motor !!!!
Yes it sure looks like it. If the cylinder can be salvaged, it would be well worth the effort. Head and cases hopefully too.
I once rescued a stator assembly that looked a lot like this one. I carefully suspended the rusted areas into Evaporust one section at a time, cleaning, brushing and wiping down with WD40 until it was clean. Never had to dis-assemble the coils from the magnets. Total exercise in patience!
Any other parts salvaged would just be a bonus.

Re: boat motor !!!!
i thought i might try cutting the head of the screws off and then losing it up to pull off . the screws are not coming out with a screw driver or impact driver that you hit with a hammer. and since this is a project in its self i will use plenty of patience , its a challenge now to see how many pieces i can save .....
Re: boat motor !!!!
Acetone will easily clean the paint off the motor. Looks like a 98 Rat to me as well. Save as much as you can! I wonder if the motor number was ground off? There’s swirl marks.... Victor

Every new engine I purchased was blank. I could stamp it to correspond to the frame # title.-----Clarence
................ that is just one of the posts that said replacement cases didn't have serial # on them thats how i understand it any way there is no number or any mark that suggest a number was ever on this motor case . albert

Re: boat motor !!!!
I have an engine that was like this, a corded high-amp electric impact drive wouldn't budge some of the screws. The solutions was to drill just the screw heads off -- a 3/8" drill bit as I recall.givergas wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 3:25 am i thought i might try cutting the head of the screws off and then losing it up to pull off . the screws are not coming out with a screw driver or impact driver that you hit with a hammer. and since this is a project in its self i will use plenty of patience , its a challenge now to see how many pieces i can save .....
After separating the cases the rest of the headless screws backed out with Vice-Grips.
Re: boat motor !!!!
after some electrolysis today some more parts came off. the Cylinder inlet studs were rusted so bad had to cut the heads off to get the Exhaust flange and Inlet manifold off then the studs that were left would not move after the electrolysis six of them came out pretty easy. needs another treatment i will let it go all day and see what happens , clutch was already off ....albert
Re: boat motor !!!!
I like your tub electrolysis setup. I've derusted tanks with electrolysis successfully.
Re: boat motor !!!!
cheap set up, had the battery charger, the copper wire was from a money making scheme my then 8 year old grandson came up with , didnt work out , the metal rods in the corners was leftovers from a project a few years ago, the storage bin was 5$ , had some PH increaser from a hot tub and there you go cheap and efficient. i also did a tank i thought i had it pretty de rusted but just for sheets and giggles i thought id give it a try at electrolysis and was surprised at the amount of rust that came out. always think of this when rust is involved. its a good thing to know..... albert
Re: boat motor !!!!
Be careful with matches around the tank though. I think the process releases hydrogen gas!

Re: boat motor !!!!
might be a nice experiment . my grandson is home schooling and i named my self the " industrial arts teacher" more things we blow up, fix, tear apart , the higher his score. clutch came apart cover and cage is ok, rest is gone . welded on nut to the exhaust manifold stud and back right out , hit an impass so going to soak it in oil for a while if i keep at it i will get in a rush and grab a bigger hammer and defeat the purpose of trying to save as much as i can.....albert
Re: boat motor !!!!
Wow! You sure weren’t kidding about the clutch! That’s the first broken fiction disc I’ve seen! Oh Terry..... Keep going! You’re doing a fine job! Glad the case was OK! How about the springs? Victor

Re: boat motor !!!!
so back to dismantling , last may 2021, i had to walk away from this motor or else i would of started beating it with a hammer and make a pile of mashed up metal out of it so in stead i put it in a tub and every week or so i would squirt oil on and around it . i did this from may to December. around the end of December i pulled it out of the corner to mess with it again. nothing i did even hinted at any movement it was when we up here in central Minnesota started getting kind of cold . so i would take the motor and put the heat to it then put it out side for the night . we had nights below zero to 30 below most are 20 below 4 or 5 touching 30 below so cold . this went on every day and night all of January and the first week of February. well this last Saturday im heating it up again for its morning warm up and i notice that a crack or fine line has developed around the piston , i should mention that i cut the top of the piston out to try and get more movement i thought if the top of the piston wasn't there the piston would flex more with the expansion and contraction, so little banging more oil and it started moving, it raised high enough that i could take out the Cylinder stud bolts, even so it took a while but the Cylinder finely came off. great , but so did the one side of the sleeve on the bottom of the cylinder looks like from how rusty the break was that its been broke for awhile . it did make the drilling out of the case screws easier and im amazed that it actually came off.. the moral of the story is sometimes you bite the dog, sometimes the dog bites you ....albert

OK, you win Albert! Worst I've ever seen. Fun challenge I suppose but there are better examples too. Following and entertained, carry on! Maxie

Yep, that dog won't hunt. Nice try Albert. You have the patience of Job. Too aggressive heat cycling? That looks pretty crispy. It was probably a goner before you started whanging.
Re: boat motor !!!!
well here it is, this is what was saved from this engine. and some of these need a little more help. it was pretty far gone
