Ace cylinder porting???....

I was going thru my spare cylinders today. One of them appears to have had some kind of porting done to it.

There are, for lack of the known terminology, some type of “finger ports” running up the inside of the cylinder wall.

Second, the holes in the base of the cylinder have been enlarged on either side.

Third, the exhaust port opening has been widened.

The porting looks like it was done by someone with a somewhat unsteady hand.

Finally, tho what appears to be somewhat crudely, the intake ports on the back of the cylinder have been enlarged.

Here’s a few photos. Can someone tell me what’s been done to the cylinder porting wise? Is it reed porting for an Ace? Is it something else? Is it useable? :ugeek: Victor

Yup. Reed valved and "hot rodded".

OK. So then it would need either an Ace piston drilled with 4 open holes on the back of the skirt, or a similar Super Rat piston?

This is the first example I’ve seen of a standard Ace cylinder converted to reed and the porting which goes with it. I get what all the enlarging does, but what do those funny looking finger ports, or whatever their correct terminology is, do for the motor? :ugeek:

Those ports provide for increased "transfer" flow. ie transfer of fuel/air from the bottom end of the engine up to the combustion end of the engine.

I see. Well good to know! I’m not quite sure of the bore on it yet, std, .010 maybe. Do you concur that it looks to have been done well enough to use even though it wasn’t done by a real steady hand? :ugeek: Victor

Long distance review suggests that the cylinder may be a "full race" cylinder with peaky power-band, a possible tendency to eat rings or pistons . . . but which runs like a cheetah on nitrous between (possible) top end failures. Waviness in the porting may not be ideal . . . but has very little to do with above knee-jerk assessment. Probably a cylinder best used by an experienced old school tuner.
