Ace 90 Off Roader For my Great Nephew Who’s 11!

I’ve been working on parts of this bike off and on, between pulling out what little is left of my hair, while trying to figure out what was wrong with the Super Rat. This is how far I’ve stripped it down so far.

I bought some 17” wheels from Bruce Young. The front 17” on this one looks like it stopped, rather abruptly, into a boulder! And it didn’t have a rear wheel at all, so I took an extra Ace 100 rear wheel with me when I picked it up. The guys who sold me the bike insisted on loading it for me and putting the rear wheel on, backwards! So these are the wheels, after I cleaned them up!

I also have a set of handle bars ready for it and an Ace tank. I may do a little paint design on the tank as well.

I pulled the seat pan, did some reinforcement welding on it and repainted the pan black. I’ll be taking it to be reupholstered soon!

I think this one is going to get a Blue theme because he’s a Carolina Panthers fan! So blue, black & silver will be the colors! :ugeek: Victor

Nice Victor. That color scheme sounds sharp.

I’m even thinking of doing the seat in a blue. May leave seat black, as both are Panthers colors.

I bought some white plastic UFO fenders and will paint them Silver, same color paint as Maxie uses for silver parts on bikes and he’s used in the Silver Streak!

Have to find a blue that’s close to Panther Blue. I have a Ford motor blue, but it may not be close enough to the cyan blue which is a Panthers blue. I’ll do a test & see! :ugeek: Victor

Did the painting today! Here’s some pics. Ford Motor Blue with silver fenders.

Tomorrow I will mount the fenders & the tires, rebuild the forks and try getting the wheels on do I have a roller!

Haven’t decided what I’m going to do with the tank yet. Thinking maybe a blue & chrome two tone???

I already cleaned up the shocks and got them mount on the rear of the frame after installing the swing arm!

Oh, and please don’t say it’s the wrong chain guard. It’s the only one I had left. Couldn’t give a bike to an 11 year old with no chain guard. :ugeek: Victor

Did a little assembly today. I bought some fork boots to put on the springs, but alas, they were too narrow. I’ll need to order bigger than 30mm.

Had to paint the top of the fork tubes black. They had rusted badly. But I don’t think it looks too bad in black. :ugeek: Victor

I had been talking to Terry about if a black Wombat Mud Skirt would fit an Ace 90. Told him I didn’t want a red one on a blue/black/silver color scheme.

Terry told me he was ordering a big order from the manufacturer an could ask them to make a black Ace 90 mud skirt. Said it would be custom. I said Great!

Well the mail came and there was a soft mailer from Terry. Opened it up and it was a “Gifted” black Ace 90 mud skirt! Boy! What a great surprise! :geek: Victor

Put my Ace 90 bottom end together. However, the kick lever is really tight. Seems the kick gear is hitting both 1st & 2nd gear on the counter shaft. Which gear is it supposed to line up on?

The only way I could even rotate the kick lever back was to turn the clutch assembly and rotate the crank. What’s wrong here? The kick lever doesn’t return to its normal position. This is my first time assembling a 4 speed tranny. :ugeek: Victor

Figured it out. The kick roller retainer hold snap came off and broke. It also caused the roller retainer to bend a bit. So I replaced them both and put it all back together! Dropped the motor in the 90 frame this evening! But time for dinner!!!

I got the motor in yesterday evening! Clutch cable installed. I was all set to install the carb but I forgot to order the “W” clip which holds the needle in the slide.

Number 11 is coming along! Even got the covers polished out. First Mother’s Metal polish and my polishing cone, then a finish off with some Flitz! :ugeek: Victor

Getting closer! I’ve been working to finish up this little 90! Awaiting petcocks from Terry, air box locking clips from Bruce & Terry, need to put the chain on, fuel lines and mount the tank & seat! No more pics until it’s finished! Just so there’s a bit of a surprise at the end!

I did get the dirty, rusty air box cleaned up & mounted! Also mounted a rear rack! :ugeek: Victor

She gets fuel today. If she runs right, I’ll do a few heat cycles and put on the chain! Then off to Dallas we go! :ugeek: Victor
