Greetings -
What would be the best lubrication and method for a working model 92 speedometer to keep it working well?
Thanks,
Doug

Well I would go by the manual. If the model 92 or any model had been stored in out of the harshest weather, more than likely there would not be a problem. If you thought you needed a lube I would probably use a 3in1 oil, sewing machine oil, gun oil, or electric motor oil or maybe a squirt of WD39+1 . I would recommend about 9 drops of oil down the speedometer cable. I tried to answer because you did ask the question. --------------- Clarence

According to the manual, the speedo unit requires no lubrication, but the cable and drive unit do.
Disassemble the drive unit, clean and pack with grease - much like a wheel bearing. Pull the cable from the housing from the bottom end. Apply a very thin layer of grease to the bottom 2/3 of the cable. Don't lube the entire cable, or the grease will work its way up the cable and into the speedo.

I sure agree with Larry on greasing the speedometer drive, Old grease can solidify. But I would only use oil on the cable with a few drops from the top. As I remember it wasn't a real problem in the old days. Once lubed it will last a long time. ---------------- Clarence

Isn’t the speedo cable lubed with a graphite type lubricant?

In the 1970's the cable was lubed with a very thin coat of #2MP grease. Today; I don't know.
