So I started off with the 93A Super Rat engine from the frame in the attic, which had been stripped to the bone for racing flat track. Wishing I had a few more parts to play with I remembered a Hodaka hanging in a backroom at a motorcycle museum near me. Being closed since March from the Covid thng he invited me down non the less. After some fun personal stories I struck a deal with the hanging wall art Hodaka and even convinced him into selling me another crusty Hodaka engine sitting on a bench. Arriving home the first thing on the list was removing the nasty gas tank and engine encrusted with heavily degraded gas....I carried that
nasty smelling engine out back and to my surprise the head bolts were loose. Pulling the Webco head for possible use on my M7480 engine, I found the cylinder was rusted somewhat but the cylinder freed from the piston easy enough. Meanwhile, back in the garage with the bike still on my rack..it took the rest of the day to clean up the mess on the frame and foot peg rail. Mocking up my motor it fit perfectly in the new buy frame. Looks like an after market air cleaner...assuming it's a Webco...can I get circle filters for it still ? Gas tank is pretty much toast and has dents on it from no fork stops...ITS Really NASTY with rust inside anyd out...
This pristine orange tanked Hodaka is at the museum in Carmel, Valley, Ca.

Keep going, you’ll get there! And watch out! When you have one in the garage, they reproduce rapidly!!! :ugeek: Victor

 All you need is a Ma Deuce mounted on the stem. The "motor" box looks like it'd hold a 4-5 foot belt of 50 cal. Now you have a full-blown, combat-ready assault bicycle.

Thanks Viclioce & Mr Matt~ I need all the encouragement I can get. (seriously)

Today I de-greased the P Motor that came out of the Museum purchase bike. My goal was to determine where the barrel was in size. Took a while but after some coaxing I found an 040 on it.. pretty good news considering the present block I'm working with has an 080 piston on order. The spare museum engine (M motor) I played with a little and found the kick starter rotated freely without moving the piston, but moved easily using a screw driver on the sprocket. Haven't pulled it's barrel of yet.

Any quick diagnoses on the free wheeling kick start shaft greatly appreciated. (M# Motor)
Also I'd like to know a brand or type of spray paint you would recommend on the jug...it will be back from sand blast this week.

Thanks in advance !!
John

John. Go to your auto parts store and buy a high heat ceramic black paint! I use Dupli-color and find it all the time at O’Riley’s! :ugeek: Victor

Kick roller retainer sacked/fractured with loss of bearings would do it. You'll find that when you open the engine cases. It's all academic actually. You are opening the cases anyway so the truth will be revealed in 3-D at that time.

That picture makes me wince, Thrown. There's an awful lot of shrapnel there.

I second the the Dupli-Color engine paint, good stuff. Read and follow the instructions and it will come out beautiful.

I’ve seen several kick start bearing retainers which end up like this. Of the 2 rats I’m rebuilding, only one had an intact bearing retainer. One even had a broken 6mm roller bearing! The other was already showing stress cracks in the corners. Both were replaced with HD retainers! My Ace B+ also had one which failed. Had to dig pieces like shown above out from between the gears which locked the motor up! I think out of 11 bikes so far, only one had an upgraded HD bearing retainer in it. Replace them along with your bottom end rebuild kits! :ugeek: Victor

Thanks for commenting Victor, Matt, Tether and Throwchain ~ Appreciate your input much.

Yes...I'd like to split both of my M motor cases at the same time. The one with the kick roller retainer damage
will be my parts bin one, in the event I need to rob a trans gear. I've yet to work up to that split day.

I managed to locate a professional bore & hone guy in my neck of the woods today and have two reed valve jugs to work with. Stock jug and head back from sand blast today...still have a Webco head available
I chose the extreme heat (header paint) @ 1200 degree flat finish for the jug. Seemed a better choice than
semi gloss @ 550 degrees. ??
I fooled around with the flat track roller today (twiddling my thumbs) Cleaned the rim, new tube, tire conditioning the old tire with the white foam jizz. Nice to find the old tire spoons back at the old shop.

The final build will be the stock Super Rat with the Cerani forks....not this roller.

I did get a quote for sandblast , undercoat zinc, finish color and clear....under $200...seems fair

The flat track looks like all the cross country motocross bikes of old yesterday. Mine has the extended frame extension and leading link front end.. I have never seen a flat tracker set up like that. Looks like you are heading for allot of fun! ----------- Clarence

Well i have two frame setups to choose from ...might use that flat tracker for motor testing as that is the coil
that ran the motor I'm working on. Here"s the other choice with the Cerani forks.
