Center Case Gasket - cement or not

I am reassembling my Model 82 DS-80 engine and am at a bit of a quandary as to whether the center case gasket (Part 821018 from Hodaka Parts, thank you Terry) needs to have any cement applied or whether it is just placed in compression and that works.

If it does need cement what is recommended ?

I did note that some "previous owner" had reassembled the case using black RTV cement which I know will eventually fail and won't work.

Thanks for the help

If you do decide to use something i'd use Three bond 1184. Read up on it. Ive used it before with no issues.
Ive been where your at before. Do i use gasket goop or not? If you dont use it and it seeps oil thats gonna suck. I would use it. Its not going to hurt you either way. Its time consuming and messy but if you get the Three bond you can cut the cap really small and spread it like your icing a cake.
I have rebuilt a handful of engines in my day. But by no means a Hodaka master like some of the gurus on this forum.
Or if your still undecided, drink some beer and flip a coin. Works all the time

I like Indian Head gasket shellac. Easy to apply, never gloppy, and plenty of working time. Cool.

I use Hylomar blue, non setting gasket jointing compound. It seals but is not cemented together. ----- Clarence

I have never heard of Indian Head gasket Shellac or Hylomar before.
This is the coolest motorcycle forum ever.
Anybody else? What do you use?

I don't use them myself since I was hipped to Indian Head back in high school (70's), but I do know a lot of builders that use one of the branded "Bond" sealants (Yama-, Honda-) with great results. I like the thinner stuff better. You apply it, with the applicator swab that comes with the bottle lid, like a thickish paint. Any drips/runs are easily wiped away. No glop. You do need to be much more insistent on making sure the sealing surfaces are true as the shellac won't make up for any inappropriate mating sins.

I went with what I know works and what was first suggested --> Three Bond 1184
Had it in the toolbox - used it on all of the other Hodaka Cases I have done (which most did not have gasket, just bonded).

Back in the day Gascacinch used to be frequently used on gasketless surfaces, but on the latest recommendations I've switched to Yamabond.

I’d say yes use something.
I would use Permatex form a gasket aviation sealant
https://www.permatex.com/products/gaske ... nt-liquid/

But as you see there are many ways to go about it.
