Relocating condenser

Question. On the Super Rat, where the condenser screws to the stator, there is a wire with a brass loop connector which the condenser screw holds down.

If I relocate the condenser under the tank, do I leave the wire with the brass ring connected to the screw, or do I solder it together with the points & the other 2 black wires?

I currently have it held down with the condenser screw & I’m not getting spark at the plug. :ugeek: Victor

I know now that the wire with the brass loop is the blue ground to the coil. Does this wire stay connected to the stator plate for a ground? Help!!! :ugeek: Victor

Yes, it stays connected to the stator plate. Make sure that wherever you are mounting the condenser that it has a good ground or you won't get any spark.

Dirty_rat. I was told to remove it & solder to the other wires. Now I need to put a new loop on the wire & put it back with the screw to hold it. I’ll do that tomorrow morning.

Is there any reason I would get no spark with it hooked up originally that way? Other than a bad condenser out of the box?

I used a 3 way connector on the black coil wire. I already had a 2 way there to connect a kill switch. So I removed the 2 way, added a 3 way connector & put a bullet on the wire from the condenser.

So the wires are all interconnected at the 3 way & I wrapped the 3 way connector with electrical tape. Didn’t have an insulator cover so I just used tape.

It’s connected like this:

Green X = black wire to stator
Blue X = black wire for kill switch
Yellow X = black wire to coil
Red X = black wire to condenser
Condenser is grounded to the coil screw.

This should work rather than just soldering the condenser wire to the black wire from the coil to the stator, right?

Hmmmm. I wonder if the frame paint is stopping the spark plug coil from grounding? Maybe I need to loosen the coil mount and sand some of the paint away for better contact? Is enamel paint an insulator? :ugeek: Victor

Paint is definitely an insulator

Do you have your kill switch wires reversed?

No. Kill switch is connected correctly. Black to black, blue to blue. Using a re-popped CW style kill switch. Black and green connected to black & blue.

I’m going to operate under the assumption that the enamel paint under the spark plug coil mount is inhibiting proper ground. I’ll pull the tank & remove some of the paint under the coil mount to see if I get a better ground & finally spark. :ugeek Victor

On my race bikes I run a ground wire directly from a mounting screw for the coil to a cylinder fin. This helps to establish a more secure and reliable ground that doesn't have to follow a path through the frame and motor mounts back to the engine.

I’m starting to think the problem may be a bad spark plug coil. I emailed Terry and asked if he has a used Super Rat coil.

I’m asking here too, in case he doesn’t. Does anyone have a spare Super Rat spark plug coil with which they can part?

I just need the coil unit, #19. I already have the mount, #20. I’d be happy to purchase it from you! Please let me know! Thx!!! :ugeek: Victor

Victor remember testing your system with a small 6 volt battery or small6 volt battery charger. Test your parts don't just buy again and try something else, so easy to test and know what is good or bad. It doesn't have to be by guess and by garsh and others would learn how to test also. I used this test procedure in the 60's. ------------- Clarence

Clarence. I’ve never been taught how to test the components. Some explaining “teaching” would be great to experience!!! :ugeek: Victor
