Need a spoke...

I have an 18” rear wheel with a 6 cushion hub. I have just one broken spoke and don’t have any extras that size. Are the ones from the 17” rear wheels the same length or are the spokes specific to that particular wheel?

If they are specific, does anyone have one or 2 spares they can send me? Let me know how much & I will send my mailing address! Thanks! :ugeek: Victor

I have some misc spokes that will fit 18 inch Wombat or Combat Wombat. If you are not sure of which wheel then can you take a measurement of the diameter of what you need?

Also, there are two spoke bends. The inner spokes have a shorter bend (less than 90 degrees) while the outer spokes have a longer bend and the bend is 90 degrees. Which spoke bend are you needing?

Have you ever replaced one spoke before? I ask because your existing spokes will have to be in good enough condition to be able to remove several without breaking them in order to get the new spoke installed. How many needing removal will depend on whether the replacement is an inner or an outer spoke.

Dale, see photo. The spoke mounts from the inside of the rim on the brake hub side. I suspect I might have to remove 3 spokes on the opposite side of the rim? The spoke measures approximately 7.5” to the bend. The bend is where it broke. I’m supporting the spoke, in position, with my fingers in the picture. :ugeek: Victor

Dale. Found a loose spoke, same length, on another wheel. Went to measure the wheel to see if spokes were the same length. Yeay!!! It’s already installed! Thanks for the suggestions about removing spokes to install! :ugeek: Victor

Victor,
What model is this wheel from? There are different diameters of spokes used. If you don't know the model then please measure the diameter.

Your broken spoke is an "inner" spoke. When lacing a wheel, all of the inners are installed first and then all of the outers are installed. Because of this, replacing one outer spoke is way easier than replacing one inner spoke. I have done both but it has been long enough I don't recall how many spokes I had to remove to get the one replacement into place. It is an exercise is patience for sure!

So, let me know either the model and/or the diameter and if I have one that will work I will put it in the mail to you.

Dale! See reply above your last one! Thanks again for the tips!!! I tightened all of the spokes as much as I could with a large flat blade screw driver from the inner side of the rim. I also ordered a spoke spanner wrench and will give the spokes a good tightening check when it arrives! :ugeek: Victor

Well obviously I completely missed the one post. Very good, glad you were able to get it figured out.

P.S. If you are working on a Wombat then the correct spoke wrench is 5mm.

The wrench I ordered will fit 6 different size spoke nipples. You just push it on as far as it will go. The deeper it sits in the groove, the smaller the size. Pretty easy! :ugeek: Victor
