I need help to id a 22 tooth 4th gear. It came out of a 24000 e code which should be an ace 100 engine but the ace 100 should have 25 teeth. Please help so I can order correct gear. I ordered another 4th gear 22 tooth but it was wrong diameter and step. The grear is 1.875 diameter and the gear section width is .350 and it’s .460 with the stepped section.

I checked through my parts stash and it doesn't look like either a model 94 or 97 gear.

Hodaka made a "close ratio" gear set that fit the Ace.

I have one, but it's in my engine now.

Maybe that's what you've got?

I have an Ace close ratio gear set in my stash so I had a look and it does not use a 22 tooth gear.

My sticking point is the heavier construction. Are all the gears like that? Was there an after market tranny available?

Initial poster with question says it SHOULD be an Ace engine.

But if it's an Ace engine, why not put a set of Ace transmission gears in it & go that way?

My recollection from reading here, is that E code motors were replacement retail motors. What I don’t specifically remember is if the E code motors were used in the Van Techs, the Steens, the mini bikes, etc. and sold to the folks which built them as complete engines.

I believe the model 94 Wombat, the model 95 Combat Wombat and the model 96 Dirt Squirt all had a 22 tooth 4th gear. Basically, all three transmissions are exactly the same except for the countershaft gear for 5th gear. On the Combat Wombat and the Dirt Squirt the 5th gear was a 20 tooth while the Wombat used a 19 tooth gear (also the primary gears were completely different for each). So, there is a good chance somewhere down the line someone put in one of those transmissions.

Here is a list of the gears for those transmissions:
Countershaft gears: 1st gear - 31 Tooth; 2nd gear - 28 Tooth; 3rd gear - 25 Tooth; 4th gear - 22 Tooth; and 5th gear, either 19 Tooth or 20 Tooth. The main shaft was as follows: 1st gear - 9 Tooth; 2nd gear - 12 Tooth; 3rd gear - 15 Tooth; 4th gear - 18 Tooth; and 5th gear 20 Tooth.

Just checked, the model 97 Super Combat and the model 98 Super Rat also use a 22 tooth 4th gear. So, it could be a transmission from one of those also (they used the same transmission).

Ennneywayeeee, I printed out your photo of the gear in a pretty precise size and found it to be an apparent perfect match for a Model 94 fourth gear I managed to break some years ago. The gear part number is 944605, and it is used in the model 94, 94A, 95 and 96 transmissions. Mystery solved?

IF the gear was actually "in" your engine, then a chart with a tooth count of all the countershaft and mainshaft gears would go a long way in identifying (with precision) what you have. You'd be able to double check against the Illustrated Parts Lists for the various models .

DOH! I just realized that I have a Model 99 Road Toad transmission laying on the bench. The 4th countershaft gear (PN: 974605) is 1.931" OD, gear tooth width is .434" and total gear body width is .467".

The gear did come out of the engine. I said it was a 24000 e code but it’s a 22000

Are you sure this gear you pictured isn’t 34605. I ordered the 944605 and it’s 22 tooth but different diameter, thickness and step depth.
