175 engine options

Ok I know this is a long shot but I’m desperate for 175 parts and after a year of looking I’m starting to weigh other options. I picked up a 175 rolling project last year and it was about 95% complete. The major problems were a missing shifter cover and mechanism and kick start lever. The engine case on the left side also had a chunk taken out of it right where the shifter cover screws on (probably why the cover was missing). It appeared someone had tried to weld a patch in place at some point but it didn’t work. So after coming up empty handed one the case half search I’m left wondering if another Hodaka lower end would be suitable. Specifically the lower end off a 250 sl. I know the 175 and 250 sl shared some parts. But am I dreaming to think I can take my 175 top end and mount it to a 250 lower end? Any other thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Terry Larson at Hodaka-parts.com acquired significant 175 motors & parts recently. Have you recently checked with Terry? If not, give Terry a call at (314) 313-5635. Call Monday shortly after 10 am Central Time to be sure to get through to him! He may be able to help you out with what he’s acquired! :ugeek: Victor

I believe Victor's suggestion is best.

A couple years ago Strictly Hodaka acquired a group of NOS Hodaka 175 engines from Spain.

Hodaka Parts Missouri aquired all of Strictly Hodakas inventory.

Before Hodaka Parts aquired Strictly Hodaka's inventory Hodaka Parts originated by buying out out E&K cycles inventory.

Some of you guys may remember E &K. They had an extensive inventory as previous Hodaka dealers.
As I recall there weren't nothin E&K didn't have.

Only suggestion I'd add is try emailing Hodaka Parts Missouri too.

I tried calling Hodaka Parts during call in hours two times on two different days, no luck.

On email I did get one response out of three tries.

If Hodaka Parts doesn't have it, then get back on this forum and put up a parts-wanted post. Long shot, but you never know.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve always kept an eye out on Hodaka Parts for 175 parts without much luck. I’ll try reaching out to Terry to see if he’s got anything that’ll help. Now that Hodaka Parts bought out Strictly Hodaka are there any other good sources for parts, other than eBay? I emailed Hodaka Parts Idaho once and he referred me back to Terry.

Also; post this on the Facebook Hodaka Fan Club site. There are some very smart Hodaka guys active on that site that rarely post here.

You can check with Bruce Young at http://www.HodakaPartsIdaho.com for used parts possibilities. Bruce scours the country each year looking for all those “barn finds” that people have held onto. Bruce’s email is [email protected]

Also check with Greg Watkins California Hodaka, [email protected]. I hope one of these contacts helps you find what you need! :ugeek: Victor

I had a badly damaged 175 left side case on a project and grafted in section of a 250SL case. The 250 case was not close enough in the cylinder area to use, but the area around the transmission output, shift cover attachments points and mag were identical. I made careful straight cuts and grafted in good sized section. I screwed the case half's together prior to welding so everything lined up. 250 cases are much easier to find and with a little grinding and smoothing the repair was hard to see. While at it I used the 250sl CDI setup from the donor engine as well. Bolts right on.
