Wombat Kickstart

Post by thirdstone »

My kickstart spring has broken. Is there a way to preload a new spring without taking the motor out ?

Lay the bike on its side, clutch side up. Rotate the kick start lever to the rear to get it out of the way. If the spring were still good you'd have to hold it back with a big screw driver stuck down into some appropriate location. Remove the clutch cover. Find the pressure piece which fell out of the cover and set it aside for re-use later. Remove the kick start lever from its shaft. Remove and replace the broken return spring and spring cup. Reinstall the kickstart lever and tighten the pinch bolt. Rotate the lever back and down out of the way and immobilize it with a big screw driver. Put some heavy grease in the pressure piece bore to hold it in place while you reinstall the clutch cover. Done - and you didn't even lose the oil!
Keep the rubber side down!

Thanks Ed
What I under from that is that it’s normal to only have 180degree ( around that figure) of preload?
I’ve since had another look at the setup . After taking off the lever it looks like the end of the spring had come out of the kick start lever hole. I think I had the spring around the wrong way as the other tang is a bit longer. Does this spring have asymmetric tang lengths or is it just my spring ?

The long end tang of the spring goes into the kick lever.

Thanks

Is it fair to say that a 97/98 lever will fit a Wombat ?I can’t see why it wouldn’t.

If you put a magnet on the clutch lever at the case, it will hold in the piece that always falls out. Learned that from Kelly & his videos! :ugeek: Victor

The 97/98 kicker will fit, but I think its longer and will lay on top the pipe when folded in. The stock wombat kicker folds into a little recess.
