Ace kickshaft bearing retainer....

Post by viclioce »

Remember when I said I thought the kick shaft bearing retainer on the Ace B+ cracked? Yuuuuuuup!!!!

Also, the shoulders on the kick shaft look like they took a beating, so I am going to cannibalize another kick shaft from an extra tranny I was given for parts. Should have her reassembled in about an hour and a half, assuming splitting the other tranny goes well! :ugeek: Victor

You should install the upgrade retainer.

Victor: With your luck I would order a Heavy Duty one from Terry at HPI. We have the same Good Luck Fairy: She hates me! The first time mine broke in my 93A it locked up the engine and I was breaking in a New +.020 Piston when it happened. Any one would think it was the Piston getting Married to the Cylinder; but no. That`s what I call a Piston seizure. I just sold 2 of those parts and have 2 left. Several Brand New ones that I had were cracked and were tossed out after I smashed them flat with a Hammer. That stock retainer may hold up but in my case they don`t. They cost $39.00 and I don`t care! Worth EVERY PENNY! Joe.

Well, I had a low mileage tranny with everything I needed. So, it’s already back together. Just need base & head gasket to come on the mail.

My youngest grandson, who’s now 14, was amazed at how fast we pulled the motor out of the bike and got it apart! :ugeek : Victor

I have a motor apart right now getting ready to make a video about the kick shaft and issue. I know in the photo the shaft and all are in backwards, but I have to to show the parts. But look what I found on the gear, cracks all the way around. This person had a heavy foot.

Yoweee! Heavy foot for sure!! . . . and perhaps a locked up engine in combination with a determined and heavy foot. I've never seen that before.

Well I got my gaskets from Terry today. The Ace B+ went back together and the motor went on the frame before a late dinner this evening.

She’s wired back up, only left the flywheel cover off in case I need to check the points. Chain on, dropped the tank onto the frame but need to add the bolts.

Tomorrow, finish the tank, mount the seat, add the gear oil to the tranny and bolt on the carb, the carb slide & cable and attach the clutch cable. Then......

Got a question. Put the Ace motor back in the frame last night. Today I was attaching the kick start lever, but even with the tranny in neutral, I can’t move the kick lever more than a 1/4 turn. Am I missing something? I can’t put the clutch cover back on because I can’t move the lever down out of the way!

I can turn the flywheel by hand & I can rotate the countershaft sprocket. I just can’t move the kick start lever far enough to get the clutch cover on.

I tried putting the kickstart lever on with the clutch cover already on, but no go. Help!!! :ugeek: Victor

Help yo, want us to tell you what ya did wrong. I don't know, does the kick shaft have end play, it needs some. I do a dry run before I install the cylinder and case sealer, a wrong kick gear? any way I put the cases together tighten the screws just to check end play and make sure everything is moving smoothly this step has saved me before. The plus factor is look at how much faster you are compared to before. -----------------Clarence

Selecting neutral makes no difference on this engine. Kick starter spins the crank when in neutral. Can you grab the clutch by hand and turn it normally?

Hmmm, not sure why I'm asking that question - regardless of the result of that test . . . something is wrong (and I don't know what it is).

There could be a piece of metal in between a gear tooth. Tear down time! I enjoy taking things apart and putting them back together just as much as riding my Dirt bikes! Strange? Yes: and proud of it!!! Joe.

Yeah. Going to have to split it again. For some reason it seemed to go together ok, but I’m guessing maybe one of the kick shaft bearings moved or dropped? We’ll see when I get her back open. Arrrrgh!

Don`t feel bad Victor! I bought 200 Counter Shaft Balls so I would have plenty. I put together a spare Engine for my Super Rat. When it was completely finished I put away the tools and there was a ball on the bench. No way! I tore down the Engine and all 20 balls were in the counter shaft! Just a ball on the bench. Better safe than sorry. Things Happen!!!!!!!!!! Joe.

Well I started working on taking the motor out of the bike at 2:30 today. Split the cases & here’s what I found.

One of the kick shaft bearings had indeed fallen down. Pulled the kickshaft out and started turning the counter shaft & main shaft. That’s when I really figured out what happened. Even the counter & main wouldn’t rotate 360*, BECAUSE, there was a retainer shard jammed on the main shaft 3rd gear. Joe hit the nail on the head!!!

I as able to pull the shard out with a needle nose and everything spun freely! YEAY! Everything rolled smoothly and went back together “slicker than snot!” As the used to say in Nawth Carolina!

Put the motor back into the frame, put the kick spring on along with the kick lever and was able to roll it back and hold it in place the traditional way with a screw driver!

I also “Found” my rear gas tank bolt which had gone missing. Seems my 4 year old grand daughter stuck it inside the brake pedal hole!!!

It’s all back together. Just need to go get a battery as we stole the one out of the Ace to get the Road Toad running!

Too late to get one today so tomorrow we are off to find a 6 volt for her locally! She looks “Whole” again! :ugeek: Victor

BTW, does anyone remember M & M Cycles in Moore, OK???

It's a magneto ignition, it'll run without a battery.

OK. Tried several times, but no start. I guess I would have to unplug the ignition switch. I’ll just wait for the battery! Tired of stripping the seat & tank off. Also may need to re-gap the points since it got pulled apart. I’m guessing removing & re-installing the stator can cause at least a marginal change in gapping? It can wait. Thx! :ugeek: Victor

Whew Victor! Glad you didn't fire the motor yet! That kick roller retainer shard could've served up some real shenanigans in that motor!!!

The worst thing is that 1 or 2 of the 5 roller needles can be missing and the Kicker can still work! If you mock up the gear, kick shaft and the 5 Roller Needles you will see that all 5 Roller needles don`t all lock up. It`s hard to find a Kick Shaft that does. If in doubt, tear it down! Joe.
