It can be done while in the cases, but not easy without the proper tools. Where are you located? Possible someone local than can help you out.

If you are attempting to move the shaft in and out without gently rotating the transmission back and forth it may be difficult to select the different gears because of the pressure on them. The shaft won't automatically index itself for each gear selected without the shifter cover attached. Make sure that you move the shaft very slowly in and out because neutrals may be much more easy to find than gears.

Great vid, Kelly. Thanks for another great vid. I learned a new twist - that being using the special tool to replace the spring retaining collar and snap ring over the pin at the same time. I will have to try that next time. Slick!

When someone asks Where are you located , it`s because some of us will help you fix it! Once the Primary gear is out some of us can do the job in around 10 minutes without the special Tool. Getting that tiny clip out is simple: getting it back in is another story. Grease. I put grease on the spring stopper and snap ring so it doesn`t become a UFO. Where are you Located? Let us know! Help is out there. Joe.

hi thanks for the info. The video was great. I had the shaft out when I was replacing the rings and cleaning the engine. when I put it back it doesn't seem to select any gears. I don't remember if you have to take the springs from the clutch side, they should still be in there, but I cannot get the shaft out again.Should it come out when in neutral? I live in Sacramento. This bike is a mixture of parts I found. It started then, but the chain was rusted solid and such. I cleaned it up and now am stuck. Any more help would be appreciated. Thanks

I’m not sure if the tool worked on either size.

Nope. Model 98 Rat and later DS, Toads and 03s use a different tool. The C clip and end of shaft diameter are smaller than the early models.

Two sizes of the control shaft snap ring tool were made.
Keep the rubber side down!
