Happy Memorial Day weekend everybody! I hope you are all getting a little seat time in. I have a quick question for all you metallurgists out there. I have an SL250 drive flange with a 44T drive sprocket attached that I want to use to replace the 40T sprocket on my SL250. The bolts are positively fused. Penetrating oil saturation has had no effect. Here's the question: Can I apply heat to the bolts/nuts to aid in removal without damaging the sprocket and/or flange. The sprocket is aluminum alloy. Thanks all!

Heat is not a bad thing as long as you don't melt the metal, Aluminum will expand faster than the bolt or nut, which causes a slight release of the bond between the metals. Heat the flange and let it cool a couple of times, that should help, but when you go to move the bolt, do it while the flange is still warm.

Matt. Also spray some WD40 on the nuts/bolts. Let it penetrate a little bit before you heat it, then fire away, so to speak. It will help expand and break things loose!

That's very generous, M, and much appreciated. With a few heat cycles and a bonus squirt of WD, I got the drive sprocket off. However....I might be interested in the rear wheel assembly for a project I'm kicking around. It depends on a 250 motor I'm trying to ice a deal on to go into a bare frame I've been tripping over for a few years. Supposedly the motor was completely rebuilt for a project that never got off the ground buuuuut the builder is kind of sketchy soooo I'm going to check out the motor next week. We'll see. Be thinking of what you need for the assembly. Thanks fellas. Problem solved.

Actually, I fell onto a rolling frame I have no real use for although the front forks and wheel keep winking at me for another project. If interested I could deliver to Hodaka Days.

Unfortunately I can't get to Hodaka Days but if we can make a deal, I will contact Thrownchain for the hook-up. He rolls through close to me coming and going.

I've already got a pretty full load going out, I do have a little room coming back.

Cedar Falls, Iowa. If you're taking I-80, I'm about 90 miles north of Iowa City on I-380. I could make arrangements to meet you in Iowa City.

Current plans are I-80 back, but may be changed to I-90 if things don't come together as planned.

Matt, I'm right on I-90 if that helps with logistics. I'm finding I also have a head, intake manifold and a set of NOS .010 rings. Shoot me an offer.

That sounds probable. My trailers is kinda small.

As a last resort I'll route thru Mt on the way home and head across I-90.

Wow! I just checked the frame number and it is P10399 which says it is one of the 600 175's. The airbox is there as is the muffler, both of which match the 175 pictures in Ken Smith's Hodaka book. The fenders appear to have been painted white over orange.

Hey, that's terrific, M. What a great score. Those parts just gained quite a bit of value for you. A forlorn 250 roller is more within my grasp. You have some of the impossible-to-find unobtanium for an SL175. If you want to let it go, let me know. My guess is that someone somewhere is sitting on a 175 motor just looking for a home.
